I’m putting together a small tool box for my sons truck and am needing a pair of vise grips. I have 2 pair myself, both American made craftsman and Irwin but after looking it looks like everyone went overseas. What is a good quality vise grip that he can use the rest of his life?

Thanks

Honestly, of what’s out there today? Bremen from Harbor Freight. They’re better than the current Irwin’s. I like the Milwaukee’s too, but they’re not discernibly better than the HF. I’ve got the old Peterson’s and the Irwin USA’s for comparison (in most variations)

Supposedly Malco is coming out with some new locking pliers out of the old Dewitt plant, but they’re delayed...again.

I DON’T like the Grip On pliers, and I’m not the only one.

Here is a small glimpse into my obsession with petersen vise grips. Go to flea markets, garage sales or even ebay. You will find these are a lot better than anything produced today as far as bang for you buck.

Opinions seem to vary a great deal over who currently nakes the best Lockning pliers.

Some people say Spanish Grip-On locking pliers, which also get rebranded by others such as Snap-On and Proto.
Others prefer the French made Facom and Usag locking pliers with the modified jaws which allow for really wide opening. These are nice, but really expensive.
Others prefer German made locking pliers from Bollman Grip, or Knipex, or one of the major German tool companies that are likely just rebranding the lcking pliers from two or three different German manufacturers. Brands such as Stahlwille, or Elora, or Hazet, etc.
Then there are the fans of Taiwanese locking pliers, which may be imports, but which seem decent, such as Gearhead from Pep Boys or Toptul, or Blackhawk.
Then you have Milwaukee locking pliers, which use a modified screw with an eyehole, which a lot of people like.
There are also people who seek out Japanese made licking pliers, of which there still seem to be two or more brands made in Japan. I forget which brands of the top of my head, but ‘Top’ may have been one of them, and maybe ‘Supertool’ another.

I bought my first set of vise grips in the late '60s, 7" WR ?? . I consider them worn out when the jaw knurled teeth are flattened. The first ones really lasted, each pair would last a shorter time. As my skills and my tool set improved , I relied on them less, so they would have an easier time. Late Peterson? Irwin ? , I wasn't impressed with either.

At last count I had over 100 sets of Peterson Vise Grips, mostly older originals.... The ones I have the most of are the 11-R / 11-SP C-clamps (finger clamps)….

Just buy him any old decent ones, they'll get lost before they wear out.

I like milwaukee the best.
