Vise Grips 10pc set $110

I was searching for a particular pair of vice grips and found this set of 10 for $110 (previously $120), including shipping and a storage tray. The product page explicitly says 'Made in USA'.

LINK

The price is decent given that this has several more of the larger tools than the smaller tools, but what caught my eye is the "MADE IN USA" in ther advertisement.

I'm thinking that 1) these sets don't sell too often so they're composed of the older made-in-USA stock, and 2) if they arrive and the package says anything other than "made in the USA" or suggests 'global components' one would be able to send them back to Amazon (with them paying the return shipping) on the grounds of false advertisement, and 3)Amazon has been known to offer a 10-20% refund to those who are dissatisfied with a purchase but opt not to return it.

I took a look at several of the other types of sets, and they do not advertise "made in USA" on the product pages.

Be Very Carefull, I bought a Vise-Grip pair at HD, splashed on the front "Made in USA".
In tiney letters on the bottom I failed to see "From Globally Sourced Components". Had that China look to the adjusting screw.

That's my point. Since they explicitly say "made in USA" for this set, and not for others, maybe it's still true.

I've also seen this on certain Irwin/vise grip products:

I never did like the release mechanism on Vise Grips. The locking pliers that I wish would come back are the ones branded Crescent; their release mechanism is sweet.

Does your set have the rubber grips??? I bought some thinking I would really like them... but I actually prefer the plain metal ones. One of these days I'm gonna try me some Grip-Ons....

Generations of folk are scowling at you right now.

I think I agree with you. The grips aren't the bees' knees'; they're just too bulky imho. I'll jump on the Grip-On bandwagon with you.

Is SO the only US distributor of the Grip-Ons?

Those are probably the Craftsman ones. They have the release mechanism that works the reverse of the Vice Grip ones.

You want one that is tough to operate? I have a Vice Grip that is so old, it doesn't have a release mechanism. You get it tight, and you are struggling to get it released.

The Grip-Ons work just like the Crescents did: you squeeze to lock on and then squeeze the extended lever to release; much less painful than the Vise Grips.

The grip on method is FAR superior. A tightly applied set of vice grips can be very hard, amlost dangerous to unlock.

I think the grip on product is just a superior tool all around.

Cool,

just found both sets cheaper and with free shipping:

http://www.devildogtools.com/vicegrip.html

The only issue is.....are they made in the USA like Amazon advertises them as?

I'll order a set of the regular non-soft grips and let you all know when I get them in a few days.

That guy is a good vendor. Excellent customer service. I bought my box from him last year. Great guy to work with...

I emailed Devil Dog Tools about his 10 piece Vise-Grip set. It's a good price and I was thinking of getting one. I asked if they were the Vise-Grips that said made in the USA on the tool or if they were the newer global components packed tools. I just got an email response from him. Here is what he said "They say Made In The USA with Global Parts."

Has anyone actually tried the USA and non-USA Vise-Grips? Are they really any different?

Performance wise I have not. But from checking in the stores I noticed some difference in the metal used and somehow the build. The USA Made ones seems to be a bit heftier.

If you remember, I posted a thread regarding Taiwan-made Vise Grip sheet metal clamps. The consistency was waaay off par, as was the finish. Each pair of pliers had a huge concave gap between the jaws.

I have plenty of "Mole" grips as they are known over here that work reasonably well in a lot of circumstances but where the very edges of the jaws - the bits that you use to grip a stuck screw or a snapped off bolt - are all chewed up because they are made of inferior metal.
I'm going after those Irwins (on another thread) because I trust US-made tools to be made of a decent enough metal to do one of the jobs I want "vise" grips to do.

...and at the moment I still only own one US-made tool, a 1/2 inch Snap On spaner (wrench), I just wish I could find it...

Do please let us know when you've received them. I'd be interested to know if they were American-made, and what you thought of the quality. I thought Vise Grip was its own company? Did it as some point get bought by Irwin? Or has it always been part of Irwin in some way?

I saw some S/O grips that I was going to buy, but this set, at this price looks very tempting.

Has anyone found any difference in quality between USA-Made Vice Grips and imported Vice Grips?

I'd like some Grip-ons, but if the imported Vice Grips are as good as the originals i've save myself some time and money tracking down the Grip-ons.

From what I can deduce from this thread its not the locking mechanism which is the real issue on the US and Chinese made Vise Grips. It's about the quality of the teeth which of course is a function of the metal used. Pls correct me if I am wrong.

If i can't find the US made VGs then I guess I'll also be looking somewhere else too.

Who needs a Knipex Cobra with Titan teeth.

what he says.
Chewed up teeth are caused by inferior metal and, as I wrote earlier, when you're trying to grip a tiny screw or stub and the metal flakes off your grips they might as well be made of chocolate.

I got them last night....super fast shipping

I couldn't find anything on the outside of the box to say where it was made. The box was not wrapped for retail display/purchase.

I opened the box up and the set is nice. I cannot find any kind of label/scribe that mentions where the parts were made/cast/assembled...so the verdict is still out.

I'll snap a few photos tonight...

^^^thanks. In addition to the S/O line, I'm also considering the Blue Point which look like the Grip-Ons if I remember correctly. Maybe I'm wrong.
