Vise Help ASAP

I'm looking at this vise and may be going later today to check it out. What are your thoughts on the price and model? What should I be looking out for? He's already told me that it's a 6" with no defects. For $50 I don't think I'll get burned, but I'm no expert on vises. Please help.

Don't touch it with a 10ft pole. That does not look like any wilton I have seen. The swivel bolt handle and the main handle make me think import along with the general shape of it. I could be wrong but that screams import to me. Get the guy to take a picture of where is says wilton, if he doesn't then he is scamin.

EDIT: Mark is right, it is a columbian made for wilton, pretty cheesey and is an import. I wouldn't touch it for $50 unless you are going to die if you don't get one today.

50$ is kind of high for that vise. The pictures are poor. It looks like a Columbian built Wilton, but I can't be sure.


From the picture, it looks like one of the jaw face screws is missing/broken, and it looks like it had a hard life. It does have cast-in pipe jaws, which can be handy. I consider it a "general use shop vise" or a "mechanic's vise". It is in no way "heavy duty".

I would look at it VERY CLOSELY before making an offer. Remove the moving jaw from the body and look inside for cracks or breaks. Look at the base for cracks. See that the lead screw isn't bent or the retainer is present. See how much slop is in the jaw movement.

You can always make a cash offer. Cash talks...Bulls#!t walks.

That's it. Personally, I wouldnt touch it, but if you need a vise, it is a decent vise. I would not pay $50 for it, maybe more like $20.

Agreed, if the OP needs one, $20 would be a decent deal.

That vise probably is an ok vise, but i agree it's most likely made in China and not an old one which would be better. since the dynamic jaw looks loose i'd probably pass on it even if it only takes a few minutes to repair because it might be an issue that a quick repair won't fix. jaws don't just usually loosen up on their own and it was probably hit with a BFH a time or two.

+1 to above advice that it's NOT top tier vise.

IF that's about only thing that's come up on CL in your area, then knock him down on price due to the jaw problem.

It is 6" vise so it's worth something . . . $50 not so much . . . maybe $20 to $35.

More on the $20 end of that spectrum. It's got nothing going for it over an HF vise in the same size, except the brand name.
