The previous owner of my house built a nice workbench and had a 3 bolt hole vise. Any idea what type of old/antique vise's would have a symmetrical 3 bolt design for the base? I don't want to drill more holes in the bench top. Any help needed.

There are lots of vises with a symmetrical bolt hole pattern. Get some measurements and post them here. I'm sure the members would be happy to help you out.

Post up the measurements and well give it a go. But then you have to find that vise at a good price? Would be really random but who knows.

Thanks guys. Diameter is 6". Distance between the two holes closest together is a little over 5 1/2". Distance from either of those holes to the farthest hole is 7 1/2".

So it's not symmetrical.

Well Matt......I put on some shoes and padded out to the shop...here is what I found:
Most Reeds are a No Go....they have 4 holes
Most Wilton Bullets are a No Go....they have 4 holes
Of the vises that I have with 3 holes.....Only Two will fit

Prentiss 19 1/2.....Swivel Base....Swivel Jaw.....there is one on CL Chicago for $100
Athol 780....Swivel Base....Swivel Jaw.....Quick Disconnect Handle.....I have only ever seen 2 so "Fuggedaboutit"

It isn't helpful at all to you ....but at least I did go out an measure.

Can you weld ? Have access to steel plate? Taps drill bits ?
You can get 3/8'' or 1/2'' plate to cover holes in bench and large enough for new vise. Either drill and tap plate to match holes in top and drill and tap holes for new vise. Or you can drill holes in plate and weld studs to match holes in top. Do the same for new vise.

Thanks guys for the help and leg work. Wish I would've asked for the vise in the house deal. I like the plate idea, may go that route.

I can not get my head around a diameter of 6" where a cord measurement is 7.5" :headscrat

Is the diameter of the base imprint, not the bolt circle diameter?

Sorry. Yes the base imprint was 6". Sounds like that thru people off. Learn something everyday on this board.
