I put a wanted ad out for a big vise. Around these parts you just can't find this stuff.

It's beat up, been repaired a million times and needs a full resto. But it will do until i find a W800.

I will be mounting this vise outside so it's awesome for what i want.

Paid more than I wanted to. (60 bucks) weighs in at just over 120lbs. Haven't found any markings on it tho.

Any ideas, guys?

Thanks

Un marked Reed 40 (last # jaw width) I have one similar. Mine is non-swivel.

Prentiss, probably pre-1920-ish.

That one is about as rough as one might ever see, but, depending on the condition of the main screw and its nut, it could be cleaned up and made useful.

cheers

This was my guess as well. No way that vise is a Reed. For what it's worth, I've been following Carla's posts on other forums for years and, in my opinion, there's no one more educated about vises.

I think it is a Prentiss swivel jaw also. It looks a little like the unmarked vise I picked up a few weeks ago.

Has the "hood" above the screw been broken off?

Take it apart and run it through the shot blaster, rattlecan it with primer and Rustoleum and see how you like it. It will probably always be worth $60.

We had a discussion a while back about the "unmarked" Prentiss vises. They certainly did make a few (I have one). The key to happiness for mine was to check the main nut when you pull it out. Mine had the exact dimensions of a similar sized marked Prentiss and even the same casting marks....minus the Prentiss model number (22..21..etc). Good luck with your efforts and have fun!!

The 'unmarked' Prentiss vises will often have a faint and small 'P V CO' lettering on one of the castings.

The Prentiss vises were, apparently, made under contract for catalogue sales firms, such as Sears Roebuck or Montgomery Wards, and had 'store brand' decals when first sold.

cheers
