Saw a vise for sale this morning that had a bolt thru the anvil portion whic held down a replaceable jaw section. Not just the jaw pads but a large piece of the vise itself It was old but i didnt see any markings. Any ideas?

And you didn't buy it and post photos? Without photos, we couldn't begin to guess, but those vises with a swiveling jaw are usually of good manufacture and worth having.

Yup, it's most likely a swiveling rear jaw and most likely a great quality vise. Without pictures we couldn't judge... but from the little description we got. I would buy it! StevenFl.

well i got back 45 mins after it reopened (my bad) and the vise sold for $20. It ended up being my good friends uncle who bought it. I looked it over and i still didnt see a manufacturers name on it. It also doesnt appear to be a swiveling jaw. It just looks like the whole jaw section can be replaced rather than the pads.

Fordman - let me start out with a /heavy sigh......if you are going to be a Vise Jedi you cannot go off half baked without your light saber...and camera. We now have a rogue vise without identification just flying around the galaxy. Post photos or no pie for you tonight.

You missed out on a nice one. Here's some pics from Catalyze that show how it comes apart. If you pull the bolt it should swivel, although it might need encouragement.

What you have there....Oh wait......You don't have it, someone else has it.... is a very nice looking, very old (as in 1920 or earlier) Prentiss vise with a swiveling rear jaw. If you measure the jaw width, I can even tell you the model. Look on the main body of the vise about 2" behind that bolt sticking out like a sore thumb and you might see some very faint lettering. The real early ones had the model numbers up high there and had that dreadful (just like mine) swivel lock button that takes a pry bar to lift. Young Jedi, the girl left with the other guy, your dog left in your stolen pickup truck, and mama just got run over by a train. This thread is now officially a contry music song....
