Looks like a blacksmiths post vise that's been modified. They usually go all the way to the ground to transmit the shock - this looks trimmed.

Mike,

The hosting services you're using isn't allowing anyone to vies the images. Also, using third party image hosting sites is a pain when you're trying to view GJ on your smart phone.

Please use the tool bar on this site to attach images directly to the thread.

Thanks!

Sorry, I did not know I could attach pictures directly. I will try that.

Sorry again, I'm getting closer, let's see if I can orient them correctly.

Great pictures!

The first vise you have is a traditional blacksmith/farrier "post" vise. Yours appears to be missing the leg which either broke off, or was cut off. That style dates back a couple hundred years and if yours has no markings, it could have been made by any master blacksmith.

Your second vise is a crudely made "leg" vise for wood working. It was likely made by the maker of the work bench. It's old, but not ancient as the screw is made from steel and not wood.

Sorry again. Being old, needing new glasses, and trying to do this on a iPhone, the combination is maddening.

That is a killer bench! And the price was sure right, nice score!

Yes, it is a nice old bench and had seen a lot in its 100 or so years. I'm stripping the top of its grease, grime, oil and god knows what else. Once I get down to the lumber I'll seal it and call it done.
