I picked up a vise and was wondering if anyone on here knew anything about the origins of it.

Thanks in advance

I believe it's European. Possibly Polish. A week in the ****** tank would do wonders for that vise.

What's up with all the missing metal on the side?
Ducs: I hope the price was commensurate with condition.

Not sure anything is missing? I think the dynamic is dovetailed and you are seeing bosses for where vertical gibb screws and nuts are.

I found this example of an fpu from an old gj posting.
Maybe Ducs vise is not an fpu.
I defer to those more knowledgeable.

That's exactly what it is !!

I gave it a quick wash to get the crud off and got it disassembled. Time to get rid of the rust.

Ducs: it looks more like a German made Leinen vice than a Polish made Bison FPU vice so post up some more pictures so we can see all the sides, top and bottom and maybe some of the guys over on that side of the world will tell you who made it. also here's a link to the TOOLS OF THE OLD WORLD where a few of the TIM THE TOOLMAN guys from that side of the world post and MONTE is maybe the most knowledgeable of them all.

you probably noticed the back jaw moves and the front jaw stays in place?

Ducs:
Very interesting design. I've never seen anything like that. I bet when you get it freshened up that it will move with the extreme precision of a milling vise. Excellent score. We're all looking forward to seeing it after you clean it up and get it working properly.

I regret my earlier suggestion that it might be quite damaged and not worth much.

I saw one recently on CL here, that was the same design. What you would think is the static jaw is the one moving in and out, and the guy said it was Polish or Czech, IIRC.

Gentlemen, here are few more pics after a quick bath and disassembly. It turns out the the paint, although I don't know if original is similar to pontiac engine blue. There is a chunk missing of the dynamic 'sled' area.

I did some research on my own. The specific and unique design of this vise is shared between German, Polish, Czech, etc. units. I found two images of a manufacturer's logo, but mine doesn't have any identification marks.

Some time in a sandblasting cabinet and various wire brushes and I am here:

I debating whether to leave the battle scars near the jaws or weld them over and grind smooth.

DUCS: there are plenty of new vises out there so why make an old one look like new if you are going to keep it. if you want to sell it you might spend the time cleaning up the nicks and gouges, but you still have the hunk of missing cast that will effect the value. if the missing cast doesn't effect it's use then leave the nicks and either BLO or paint it and mount it to your bench.

looks a lot less like an anchor now. WELL DONE!!

For the $35 and some time to clean it I've got into it, I would rather put it to use rather than just scrap it.
I don't think I will even paint it, just assemble it, battle scars and everything and use it.

Ducs: a little grease on the metal parts that move on each other and some BLO or wax on the vise and you'd be ready to use it for a while. not sure how often you'd need to re wax or put on more BLO, but you'll know and if you don't put it on and get some surface rust it's not the end of the world as long as the moving parts are greased or have oil on them.
