Can anyone tell me who made this vise? The collar near the handle says "model 51". I want to restore it but want to know a little more about it first. Thank you.

Hello, DH,

I'd think that some of the Craftsman collectors here could give you a date range of manufacture, going by the cast recess for the Craftsman logo plaque. (late '40's to early '50's, maybe?)

The casting shapes suggest that it might have been made for Sears Roebuck by the Columbian works. (thats a guess, tho.....I don't know that for any certainty)

cheers

Carla

DH: i think that Craftsman vise it a 1950's or early 1960's made by Columbian vise. it could be as early as late 40's too cause that Heritage badge started just after WWII I'm pretty sure. i've got one or two of them and they are built pretty well. once you clean up the HERITAGE style Craftsman badge on the side you'll see at least see Craftsman. or your badge could be MIA if it's not there under the dirt and grime.

here's one of mine that isn't much cleaner and this one is a 4 inch wide jaw with a little bend in the swivel bar and handle, but overall in pretty decent shape.
