Vise identification? Update

Looking for a little help identifying this vice I picked up yesterday. It is a heavy duty unit, 6" wide jaws. I see no identifying marks other than 4 small holes for a missing tag on the right side, looking at it. Tag would have been aprox 2"x1".

I would have said it was an older Record, but they normally have the name and 'Made in England' cast into the body. Maybe a knock off of some sort?

Thank you, I guess I did not realize there was a dedicated thread just for vises. I guess I should have known though as there is a thread for almost every tool, workbench, shop dog, etc. LOL. I love this place. 2246 pages, wow, a lot of proud GJ'ers showing their stuff. Deep rabbit hole for sure and I'm heading in, wish me luck. Gonna be a journey, but very scenic looking at all of the treasures.

If anybody recognize's it in the meantime let me know, TIA. Might save me a few beers

I believe you might be right. I started cleaning it up a little yesterday and what I thought to be primer (pinkish/red areas) turns out to be body filler. No s##t, body filler, who does this stuff? I cleaned out a little with a flap disc and casting is a little rough with some fair sized pitting. I'm only into it for 35 bucks and am giving it to a good neighbor that we trade favors back and forth all the time. All of his tractors are green while mine are blue. I will blast it all off, clean it up mount it up on an old semi brake drum with a 3x3 or 4x4 post, paint it all green with yellow accents. Most likely I will deliver it in the bucket of a blue tractor.

I agree with big Dave that you are most likely dealing with an Asian made copy of an English vise like Record or Woden or Paramo.

The castings on the asian made vises are so rough that they need nearly a gallon of body filler just to look vaguely smooth.

Got it finished up. Once I got done with blasting out all of the filler I filled in some of the worst spots (horrible casting in my opinion) with Tiging some brass it and some high build primer, not the best "body" work but its going into the neighbors working shop. Set it in his shop last night while he was out of town.

For me, part of working in my shop is the connection to people and projects over a long period of time (basically my whole life). I have curious continuities everywhere that give me a smile when I notice them:

• An old snap-on ratchet by buddy gave me that he calls "willis". His uncle gave it to him. He gave it to me. It's on my quick rack. I'll likely give it to his son when he is old enough to appreciate it.
• An empty bottle of Jack Daniels my friends and I finished after building out our bike shop / art collective space in Brooklyn years and year ago. We had fun and built incredible things there for nearly a decade after.
• A sweatshirt some friends had screenprinted for me after I bought an industrial building in Philly and built it out as a shared workspace. Has a micrometer on the breast and can of beer labeled "cold & full" on the inside of the left arm.
• A brass drift with knurling and a machined face stamped with my initials. Two friends I'd been teaching to use the lathe made it for me.
• A withered pile (almost dust now, really) of wildflowers I picked and stuck on my handlebar roll from the 12,000 mile roadtrip I took around the country on my '58/'71 frankenshovelpanhead.
• An old eyeglass sleeve with a Starrett micrometer inside with my grandfather's name engraved. He was a tool and die maker. I learned this years after I had taught myself machining work and my mother said "I have something for you".
• Forged coat hooks from a friend in Milwaukee who started making art after messing with motorcycles his whole life

The list goes on.

Thank you all for the nice words. It was a fun project. I tried to locate a vertical John Deere sticker that I could have turned into a stencil to paint on the post but had no luck. He came home this am and found it, he sounded excited when he called.

Jason, I too have many items in the shop provided by others that bring back fond memories. I have a Gentleman Jack bottle (empty) that reminds me of great times. A group of us that would meet for a week in Custer, (late August, After the rally) for many years from different states. One year before the trip the Jack Daniels girls were lazer etching bottles in the liquor store. I had them put Custer trip and the year on the front of the bottle of Gentleman with all the names of who was going to be there on the back. The group surprised us with 2 great riding friends from yet another state. The next spring the Jack girls were back at the liquor store (the only 2 times I have ever seen this) and let me bring the empty back and add the other names and "special guests" to it. I look at it and have great memories.
