What was this for? I have never seen one like it before. Any value or interest in this type?

Its a blacksmiths vise, value is north of $100 around here. I guess it depends on your region, but in some areas that stuff will go quick.

It will take some time to get pics of markings, it is available in MO but will take some time to remove and get listed.

How wide are the jaws? Looks like it has provisions for pipe jaws, also looks like the factory mount is MIA and replaced with that homemade one.

What you have there is a blacksmith leg vise. They are a dime a dozen around here and sit on CL for months on end priced at around 50 bucks.

As 'blacksmiths' or 'leg' vises go, that one is relatively late production, quite possibly as late as the 1940's, as may be seen in its smooth 'drop forged in forging dies' configuration, and the simple 'style' of the screw and nut.

That one appears likely to be of the common 'Columbian' make, and may have a 'letter C in a diamond' marking somewhere. The bench mounting plate, if original and not a shop-made replacement part, appears typical of the later Columbian production.

Depending on its size/weight, that vise should certainly have some value, for any active blacksmith, especially if it is one of the medium to larger sizes, 6" or 8" jaw width.

cheers

Carla
