And now for an oddball.

Dropfo 3" swivel base, made by The Fulton Drop Forge Co. of Canal Fulton, Ohio. (Thanks bl00 for the ad.)
3" jaw, 5.5" opening, weight 22 lbs.

In addition to being neat looking, this vise also has a wedge-lock system in the swivel base that locks the swivel when vise jaws are tightened. You can also independently lock the swivel base with the small lever under the dynamic jaw.

This vise has some issues. The swivel base is seized. I got the swivel lock loose with an alignment punch, but the base won't budge. The vise itself functions fine, some play but not bad. The handle for swivel lock is missing. The main handle is slightly tweaked. Lots -o- saw marks. Lastly, the jaw pad on the dynamic jaw looks to be a larger than original replacement, and is loose.

Edit: oh yeah, forgot: vise is made of drop forged steel.

Peoria Steel and Tool Company. Here is a rare one, Fierljeppen ever see one like this. Shows some modifications and looks like it had the automatic lock down on the swivel base like the Rock Islands.

4-1/4 Jaw width that opens to 9".

Wow, another interesting patent vise by J. R. Long! He's got to be the most prolific vise inventor ever.

I've never seen this vise before and after a little research, it seems that the Peoria Steel & Tool Co. had a very short-lived life, trying to merge with the "Automatic Vise Co." of Akron Ohio.

There's more to this very interesting story, because it seems that somehow G. P. "Live-Wire" Blackiston is involved. Somehow, he emerges immediately after the failure of the Peoria Steel and Tool Co. and starts producing J. R. Long patent vises for the Pittsburgh Automatic Vise & Tool Co.

I'm very intrigued and will be investigating more. Good stuff KMScott!

Thanks Fierljeppen, your tough to stump. The owner of this vise guessed J. R. Long and I agreed but wanted to hear from it you. I have looked at several of J.R. Longs patents when I was trying to help Twertsy, I just could not help as much as I wanted when the Spreadsheet needed some work. I have a couple vises at home that I picked up this year and will post them to see if they are rare also. Thanks for your help again. Sure appreciate it. I'll add the Peoria to the spreadsheet.

Thanks Jeff.

The second patent is also a JR Long patent - #732761.

Patent can be found here:

Blackiston was more than a character - Did you see this one?

I have more on Blackiston, (including the image of his car), just need to find it.

Here's what I can quickly dig up, and a couple news articles:
1908 Vise Patent by Blackiston
1912 he's with Berger Mfg. Co. Prior to that Crucible Steel Co.
1914 he's with the Canton Cutlery Co.
He also expected to live 200 years.........

American Red Seal (American Scale) #55 5-1/2" jaws.

Just a note, Red Seal also has a model 55 with jaws that are 5" wide and with different hole patterns. Gives Jaw Makers grief.

Here's the back of a VELOX.---Notice the jaw off-set.---It has kind-of the same action as a DODGE SLIDE-SET.

Rock Island 584, No spec:s on this model. This one is missing a jaw and seems a little rough.

Here is one I picked up a while ago and really have no idea of it's make. 4" jaws that opens to 6" and weights 60lbs. Jaws are 4 x 1-7/16 with 2" Center to Center and has a 5/8 channel 5/16 deep. Nothing in my jaw collection matches up. Look forward to getting this back in shape and a new set of jaws on it. Maybe there is some text under the paint.

I've not seen one of these before either, but it sure is an attractive little vise. For some reason, and I'm not really sure why, but it kind of puts me in mind of some of the Holland and/or Erie Tool vises.

I don't know, Hollands never built jaws as far as I know. I am not to familier with Erie Tool Works. I could not pass up this vise when I seen it for sale in Ft Collins.

Rock Island 3B. 3" jaws that opens to 4-1/2" and weights a little over 20lbs. It is the Automatic Swivel Base model, when you clamp onto your workpiece the swivel base locks.

va, looks like a useful vise for a hobbyist. I might try to make a swivel ball like that one day if I ever get a chance to work on vises. Building hundreds of jaws right now since I took July off.

Possibly for the record. I see there is two empty rows for the #2 vises.
What I'm guessing is a pre Allentown vise.

Screw has a collar.
No other visible markings other than "Bonney".
Iron jaws are almost 2", it will hold a 2-3/4" piece.
Though broken weighs 2 lbs 13-1/2 ozs.
Thats how it looks after Simple Green overnight soaking.
Jeez, I'm almost out of black wax.

Just picked up this Yost 41C off CL today. Been hoping to find one of these type of vises since seeing the pics of the Parker Big Bear. Apparently Autopts had one back in 2011 but sold it. This one is a little different than his with cast in place jaws and the swivel lock handle is different. First 2 pics are from seller's ad, rest I just took. I'll get the weight in a day or 2, guessing around 65 lbs., give or take.
