I have a Parker 433 1/2 that by all accounts seems to be the later model number of the 87. Catalog pages I have show both as 47 lbs. and 3 1/2" jaws that open 3". I have been confused by the max opening also because my screw is long enough to allow the vise to open normally. Measuring length of the protruding slide my 433 1/2 actually opens just over 4 1/2".

Thanks Chris, added a note to the 433-1/2 stating what you mentioned.

Hello All , I'm new to G.J just wanted to say hello and ask if anyone knows where i might obtain a swivel base for my newly acquired C Parker GG vise. It's a monster and before i start trying to fabricate something i figure the original parts would be better.

What is the diameter of the base on your 6" vise ?

Well you can imagine my surprise when I saw how short the screw out of the 87 was. I inspected it closely expecting to find evidence of a break, nope. Installed the longer screw from the other vise, pat myself on the back for restoring the capacity of the vise. A few months later stumbled across a catalog page and was surprised to see the small opening. So now I'm in a quandary, swap the screw back to keep it original, or leave the longer screw because it actually makes more sense? I have a few catalog page pics from 1916-1925 showing this vise, most show 3-5/8" jaws that open to 4-3/4", but the 1922 page shows 3-1/2" jaws that open to 3". I didn't actually measure mine before I swapped the screw, but there was quite a bit of slide hanging out the back of the static jaw as the screw ran out.

I passed up an 88 that had some saw support issues a while back, I thought that the mainscrew was broken as well with how short it was

Starrett 015 Vise. 5" Jaws that opens 5" and weights 39lbs. This vise has issues with the previous owner grinding his projects.

Kevin, funny you should ask this. I picked up an 87 last year, couple pics in this post https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6474650&highlight=Parker#post6474650 Real nice shape other than missing the handle. A while later I came across another Parker for cheap, think it was a fixed base and not a combo, and figured I'd swap the screw since it had a handle. KMScott: First off, much respect and gratitude for all that you do for the vise collecting community.

Following up on the differences found on the Parker 87 vise opening, I've found some more information.

Scan #1 (1876) is the oldest print I could find for #87, with some additional missing spreadsheet information on other early Parkers.

Scan #2 (1905) show's an opening of 5", which is the 3rd different spec. for #87.

This could be important information for someone trying to date a Parker #87.

Thanks again!

Thanks Fierljeppen, updated the spreadsheet. Many listings on the spreadsheet are from catalog pages so I will be watching to see how accurate the info is once a vise is measured. Again thanks.

Note that the CP 87 Fierljeppen is showing is an under the bench swivel type, probably need to make that distinction.

I can not remember where I got the 209 but it did come out nice. I support the jaws for them but none has been sold so not many out there. Thanks guys and thanks for the catalog page Fierljeppen. Filled in a couple cells.

Prentiss # 181 Combination Vise. 3-1/2" Jaws opens to 4-1/2" and weights 55lbs. There is two versions of Swivel Base Prentiss's. One swivel clamp that releases from under the bench and the other has a bench mount swivel.

Starrett 616. 6" Jaws. No weight or Max opening info supplied, another question would be does this vise come with a swivel base?

Prentiss 254-1/2. 4-1/2" Jaws weights 66lbs and opens to 6-1/2". Same vise as the 264-1/2.

254 1/2 being stationary base, 264 1/2 being swivel base.(but you probably knew that)

Great work as always Kevin.....on the spreadsheet and your fantastic restorations and machining of jaws and other vise part.

You are a man wearing many hats, machinist, reverend, doctor, statistician, among other titles; the vise threads would not be the same without all you bring to them :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks SAA44-40. Can you supply the Make and model #. Weight, jaw width and max opening. Is it missing the rollers or fixturing that bolts on top? I have seen some like yours I believe. Thanks for your help.

I had the 5230 already on the spread sheet.

I did find the kit that is a option for your vise and maybe you can keep a eye on e-bay for one of these. This Metl-Former from Swayne-Robertson & CO looks to be made for vises like yours.

https://books.google.com/books?id=3...RBlUQ6AEIKzAA#v=onepage&q=Metl-Former&f=false

Here is a Metl-Former vise with their kit added. No Info on this vise.

Thanks KM- not sure how I’ve gotten by in my life without that attachment. The search is on. Why do I have the feeling that if I can find one I’m gonna get sticker shock.
