Thanks everyone for the info!

Guess now I have another question... I just lucked upon this vise and started to take it apart to strip and repaint. After I cleaned off most of the gray rattle-can spray paint the orange started coming through and now it has a nice patina. I think I'll just give it a shot of matte clear-coat and let it be.

My question is, is this vise rare at all? I didn't see any 3.5" cadet vises on E-bay to compare with and all the other cadets were 4" Schiller ones while this one is a Chicago... Is there a production data set for Wilton vises that show how many were made year by year?

I had planned on putting it down in the old tractor shed but if it's sorta rare then I might re-think it but I'll probably still put it down there.

Nothing quite feels like an old Wilton...

I shiver when I walk past some of the vises in the hardware stores that they now slap the Wilton name on. What a shame...

Thanks again, you guys are great!--Chopsaw84

The Wilton Cadet vise was first advertised in 1954. That model was produced at least to the mid-1970's, while they dropped the 3-1/2" vise around 1971.

I wouldn't call them rare, but I wouldn't say that they're common either. Being that they came out in 1954, the "Chicago" castings would be a lot harder to find than a "Schiller Park".

The few Cadets that I've seen looked to be very high quality vises, just a lighter version of the machinist model.

The old Heuers look way better, though. The vintage Fronts don't use the Heuer I beam thing but a solid round bar. The vintage 5" can be had for little money, a 6" costs 60 - 90 euros (rare, but pop up now and then), and if the seller is willing to ship, shipping. Still beats the prices for a new one. Vintage back opening ones are a bit cheaper and if a modern I beam Front is acceptable (sometimes with visible nut and tube for the screw, looks nicer), getting a used one is really the cheaper way.

i picked up a Parker for 20 bucks at a tag sale, it has the bevel like the photo here, what was the purpose of it? I removed it nicely with a grinder so it bolted up tight to the face of my workbench.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the earlier info on the Wilton Cadet 9135 vise. Appreciate it Fierljeppen...

---

Here is another one I have that I'm curious to see what you guys can tell me about. Didn't wipe it down but it looks nice when cleaned up.

It's about 28" long closed and about 36" extended. Only stamping on it is "Patented Sept 22 1914". 3.5" jaws.

The lead screw is hollow and the handle turns a shaft that has a "bit holder?" inside the jaws.

I can get better pictures later in the week if needed.

chopsaw84...Congratulations! You've got a spreadsheet vise. It's a Rock Island No. 390 in nice condition, not missing a lot of parts.

KMScott...Yeah, that Athol is really old.

I had replied a few days ago but I don't see my reply showing so I must have screwed it up somehow....

Anyways, just wanted to make sure I said thank you very much for all the info and especially for the catalog page picture.

That's awesome, the patent info is also very cool and I may end up getting nice prints made of both and framing them.

Much more info than I expected to get so again, thank you guys!

KM,
Thanks for the reply.

Here is a Reed 23-1/2 Utility vise that's different from what I saw on the spreadsheet. I found it interesting because I didn't know that Reed made a light duty vise. Although it looks like a homeowner's vise, it's just as robust as their heavier duty models.

Details:
* Make/Model: Reed 23 1/2.
* Manufactured by: Reed Manufacturing Co. Erie, PA. USA.
* Estimated manufacture date: Circa 1960s.
* Jaw measurement information;
Width = 3-1/2".
Opening = Over 4-1/2".
Depth = 2-1/2".
* Features lightly serrated, removable jaw faces and cast in pipe jaws.
* Anvil surface measurements; 2-1/2" x 2".
* 3 hole swivel mount with 360° rotation and 2 lock handles.
* Overall measurements of vise;
Height = 6".
Length = 11".
Width = 7".
* Weight; 23#.

Found these, Leinen and offset vises. No idea who the maker of the offset vises is but maybe one might pop up in real life some day.

Athol 612-1/2. 2-1/2" jaws.

It’s to bad Athol really did some what of a poor casting job on the markings. I’m wondering if it could also be a 613 1/2 also.

KMS, that's only the second #99 I've ever seen, the other was on the big thread.

This one has replaceable Jaws va, trying to figure out if they were factory installed.

Rusty, you could be right, all I can do is find the images and try my best to verify them. Thanks for the catalog page, later I will update the Spreadsheet. Thanks. Kevin

Hi guys,

When I was digging through my vise collection to get out the Rock Island 390 (thanks again for all the info) I pushed this one aside.

Now that I'm re-organizing I remember buying it for $30 and still think it's a very cool vise. I should do something with it...

Didn't see it in the catalog, Simplex/Ridge 42CPSN sheet metal workers vise, 4.5" jaws and 24" in length closed.
