Any chance you could take your 31 apart and post some close ups of the swivel base. I am restoring a 23 and the base is gone. If its a hassle don't bother. I am not going for an exact match just trying to get close here are a few pics. It also has its own thread if you are interested in following along. Thanks either way

Vise, that #31 came from FB. I have one older but it has the swivel base that releases from under the bench.

Would like to now a bit more about this vise? Seems it's an 'IDEAL' type/model 'ACIER'. Can't remember where I got it from. I think it's original colour is green.
Any info is much apriciated!

"Acier" is French for steel, so probably from France? Does not look anything like a "made in China". Has slight resemblances to some English vises and maybe certain Columbian and Desmond Stephens/Ridge Tool traits, but overall unique enough to not really be a knock off any vise that I know. Probably its own brand.

Being that you are in Belgium and parts of your country speaks French, is it made in made in Belgium?

Thanks for the info. Next to the 'IDEAL', BRte is written. Indeed quite possible it's made in France or Belgium. Also '4' is written next to 'ACIER'. Through Google I find similar vise for sale in the past but indicated as 'BREVETTE'. Think BRte is something like company or so in French.

BREVETTE is French for patent. I am quite fluent (but not perfect) in French, never heard BRTE being related to company. My guess would be that BRTE is just an abbreviation for BREVETTE.....patent or patented.

Thanks! Now I feel stupid . So as simple as it is, it's an Ideal patented vise Nr4 in steel (Acier)... In Dutch you get a brevet for example when you can swim 50m and so on so I had to know the word to but never made the link.
Now I want to find some more info about Ideal vises. Like mentioned before it's for sure not some kind of knock off. The hunt for more info is on :)

Through Wikipedia I found out 'Breveté' stopped to be used in 1968 so the vise has to be older.

Big thanks again!!!

Kevin if you're so inclined to add some info to the list: the weight of a Reed 105 R is 76 lbs and the weight of a Wilton 8450 is 60 lbs (opens to about 5").
thanks

I seem to have stumbled upon a 3.5" swivel jaw swivel base Wilton vise. From what internet research I have done it seems to be "rare", I am not an expert in the field.

I have many pictures available but it wont let me post them yet.

It was date tagged 1963, but it was odd because it look like it was stamped twice by mistake about a 1/2" apart, so it was a bit had to read.

Does any one have any information on the rarity of this vise? I am attempting to do a restoration on it.

Thank You.

Here's a scan from "wrenchguy's" Athol no.31 catalog. The rest of the vises from that catalog can be found here.

There is a listing w/ specs for a Hollands 43 but no picture. In fact I couldn't find another pic anywhere which is part of the reason I had committed to buy this rare liitle swivel jaw. Unfortunately when the seller was taking it apart to ship it was found to have pretty nasty tail crack.08646f01c2134c2dedd57c0d67789a3e.jpg

This blue vice is one that I have had over 30 years in my woodshop. Now with a downsize of homes it is in the garage/shop for the first time. I dont see a name on it but its a 5 inch wide jaw any ideas as I have always wondered.
I have a few other vices that are mounted on the frame /assembly table like a Wilton and old leg vice and and ......

That's to bad Chris, thanks for adding the pic. I sure like the swivel base lock downs on the Hollands.

Not a vise but a vise accessory. Patented in 1921 as "equalizing attachment for vise jaws", marketed as "P&K Vise Grips". Handy and cleverly designed, wonder why we don't see more of these.90e169a764c31be525293741b5305f5d.jpged1b2ae352e474dafe86e8e2a34c99fb.jpg52a070a3c40439957c3fc6910bf350ba.jpg6db3617b41ca5a5bd4749e18e71f11b9.jpg
