I've never done this, but I would think you could make a large backing plate to mount on the underside of the sheet metal. This should be sturdy and good for anything other than heavy duty work.

ditto what naylor said. that tool chest is a nice piece for the price. i roll mine under my workbench, and roll it out for an additional work surface. make the backing plate out of 1/4 plate a fair bit bigger than the vise 'footprint' and make sure the plate fits into the corner of the underside of the top for rigidity. depending on the size of vise and planned use, you could tap the plate for mounting the vise w/o nuts.

thanks for the info. i wouldn't of thought about taping the plate.

currently my vise is mounted to my work bench. the bench is 16 foot long, and i was gonna take a few feet off so i can but my box against the wall and free up some more floor space as i am running out of that.

even better, if you tap the plate, tighten the bolts down, then tighten some nuts on the bottom of that to act as jam nuts.

I used a section of Wenge worktop that had been the cutout for a sink to go on the top of my tool cabinet.
Mounted my cheapo vice to that.

That's the good part and its OK but as its all on wheels it moves about a bit, its a less that perfect way to mount something that should be totally solid.

If at all possible I think its worth mounting it on the bench instead, plus you can still fit a top box onto the cabinet that way.
