vise mounting - bench or stand?

What is better? I guess a vise on a bench reduces bench working area. A separate bench stand should however be very heavy.

I prefer a stand if it's heavy duty enough and anchored down solidly.

Mine used to be on my bench and then I moved it to at stand. The stand is much more versatile and clears the bench top for other junk to accumulate.

I bought a cheap stand at HF, put locking caster on it and have a vise on one end and a 6” grinder on the other. Move it to wherever I need it and stow it under the wheelbarrow hanging on the wall.

I have my vise mounted on the corner of my heavy steel welding table, but it's bolted down with 1/2" bolts and wing nuts so I can remove it easily if I need the room on the bench..

I think it depends on the size of your vise. I got this 4 1/2" Morgan on its stand and it moves around fairly easy. If I have to take it to the shed, I just put the hand truck behind it and off I go. if your vise can be near your work time is cuts down, and you will use it more. Just something to throw around.

I'm thinking of using a big pipe and rim as a stand and fill the lot up with concrete to make it heavier.

I'm thinking of putting a couple of stands in the garage bolted down. My plan is to put receiver tubes in the stands and then have everything on receivers (vises, grinders, tire changer, bender, small anvil, bench press, etc). I'm trying to come up with a simple and strong way to lock the units into the stand. Right now I thinking of slotting the bottom of the receiver (in the stand) and welding ears on it so I can pinch it closed with a bolt.

I like this idea! Many times I am using a vice to take something apart or assemble something and like the vice on the bench so I can lay out tools and parts. A vice on a stand would be nice too though. Make the base heavy enough to be stable but easy to move around. There are a few times that being able to move a vise outside would be handy.

I've had 60 lbs with those jaws open 5" and it gives no hint in leaning foward. If your gonna go with a stand, make sure the base covers enough ground for leverage.
