I have a couple of large vises that I would like to start using in my shop. They have been stored for the past few years. I can't remember what they are, I know one of them is a Reed but not the model number. Both are pretty big and heavy, maybe 60-70 lb each.

I expect to use the vises for "farm-type" work, so the occasional beating may occur, but mostly I need them to be solid, so that the aforementioned beating won't tip them over, drag them across the floor, or shake the whole building. I've given consideration to a heavy timber-frame workbench (white oak), a large tree stump about 36" high, a welded assembly made from a a truck rim and a steel pipe, or actually mounting them to the structure of my garage (I have laminated posts which are 6" x 12" between the garage doors).

What do you guys have your vises mounted to to solve this problem?

If mounted to a bench, then fix the bench to the structure of the garage.

If the tree stump is still in the ground, that would make an ideal vise mount location. I can't think of any more secure base. Just make sure to weatherproof your vise.

And, if right handed, mount on the right side of the bench so that the static face is forward of the bench top.

We have always mounted 6" vises to metal tables. Like the one in the picture. More solid than the brake drum stand
