I've never had a working vise and i want to put one on an upcoming welding table build but i don't know what vises are good and what are bad. I'm currently looking at a [vintage] as the ad says 103 Yost vise so if anyone can steer me in the right direction that would be great.

Thanks

Read the "Vises of Garage Journal"...

There's 881 pages of knowledge, and general stuff, that you can't get anywhere else...

GJ member "Balane" has a Craftsman 5197 on Ebay that will fulfill 99.9% of your clamping needs...77 pounds is a stout 4 1/2" vise...swivel base, too...no reserve auction...ergo---fair price for a restored classic...see attached photos...

If you were looking at "good", as opposed to imported el crapola, new vises, the prices would range from $ 500.00 up...i.e....Wilton 450S....Over $ 800.00 from Amazon, and "only 71 pounds", they have a rabid following and, used, command higher prices than most old iron...

If knowledge is what you're after...there's 881 pages of it...right here...
