I've been cleaning and reorganizing my garage for the past several days, and decided to put the vises that were scattered throughout it in one place. I've attached some photos. I figured that some of the folks here would have an interest in seeing a few of these vintage workhorses.

I just love that Prentiss. Beautiful lines and highly esthetic. (y)

Yeah, that graffiti Prentiss is nice! You may want to hang on to the Wilton 450S since Wilton, for some unknown reason, is no longer offering the machinist vise with a 4-1/2" jaw any longer.

According to the "Bluebolt database", that particular casting is fairly rare, since it only shows up on (1975-76) date-stamped vises. Do you know what the date-stamp is on that vise?

Thanks everybody! It’s good to know there are others out there preparing for the impending visepocalypse. :)

I bought the Prentiss earlier this year, and was surprised to find it in such good condition. I haven’t looked at the date stamp on that Wilton yet Fierljeppen, but that will be easy enough to do tomorrow. I’ll let you know what I find.

Here's the date stamp on the Wilton bullet with the 4 1/2" wide jaws. Good call Fierljeppen, the date is January 1975.

And here's one that was hiding in the background that you really couldn't see in the photos I posted. It's a Craftsman 5191. Since the jaws on this vise have practically no wear it looks like it was barely ever used.

I've also included a better image of one of the other vises that you could only see end-on in the photos I posted before. It has the giant looking meatball on the end of the lead screw, and is a very special rapid adjusting vise. As far as I know it is the only one of its kind known to exist. And Fierljeppen was kind enough to discover who designed and built it.

Can anyone else post up some images of your rare/uncommon vises?
Wow!!! Maui, you've managed to find an ultra rare W. E. Snediker patent no. 686,484 XL Rapid vise. I believe it may be the first one show-cased on the internet. It was manufactured by about -3- different companies, with the last one being the G.M. Yost Mfg. CO. until around 1909.

You've got a model no. 50, as seen in the 1903 catalog scan below.

1903_hammacher_schlemmer_no.180_pg.164.jpg

It has a very unique rapid transit device, described and illustrated in the magazine scans below.

GJ member Mark Stansbury already has some historical information about the inventor in the link below.

Here's the patent link.

Please take some time and upload some detailed photos in good lighting so we can have some quality photo's for record. Also, please reach out to KMScott, so that he can add this information to the "Vise Spreadsheet".

I knew that was a really special vise! I could smell it all the way from Chicago.

Vise on!

That would be a major detour for your thread.
Maybe start a new thread? A rare or unusual vise pops up over on the main vise thread but lots of other posts mixed in between.
