I've done a serch and found a bunch of close up pictures of some nice vices.

If anyone has them handy I'd like to see some pics of where you locate them in your shop and why.

I bought a used 6" record vise, but everywhere I put it on my bench seems to be in the way. Guess I have to get used to it.

mines on the left hand corner of my work bench, an old beat up 4" wilton that i got for free for helping show my neighbor kid how to do an oil change on his car...i figure thats worth that! it does get in the way at times, but it was my only placement option unless i wanted to drill into the block wall.

I have two 5" Craftsman vises, both mounted on the Right Hand corner of workbenches, one is a roll around table and one is a heavy wooden one.

I had one on the LH end of a workbench and didn't like it, moved it to the rolling table. I'm right handed, and prefer the vise on the right side of the bench.

I use a generic 6 inch. Had it at the left front corner of my bench for a decade or so, but now it's on the right front corner. Moved the bench, the left butts against the wall now.

I think I like it better on the right front corner. But I agree, it gets in the way sometimes. I can't think of a good quick disconnect method for a heavy vice, so I will live with it.

Stuff mounted on the workbench is a drag. I went to a floor drill press just to free more bench space, not because the bench mounted one wasn’t adequate.

When I was a kid helping/learning from pop his vise was always mounted on the left corner of the bench so that was what I was used to. When I set up my shop years ago I just automatically mounted the vise to the left corner of the bench cause that was what I was used to, and it just worked out that way. Unless you have an ungodly amount of room in your shop with miles of bench space you just get used to working around the bench space that the vise steals.

I'm left-handed and prefer them on the left, but my Wilton is currently mounted on the right because that was the only space available.

I have a piece of 4" fire sprinkler riser pipe that is flanged. I am thinking of bolting it to the floor and mounting the vise on top.

I just need to find a piece of floor that is not in use...:headscrat

Get a swivel vise. Mount it on the left OR the right corner. Swivel it one way for right hand work. Swivel it the other way for left hand work.

That's what I did with mine.

That's what I did with mine.

Mine was originally a swivel vise. At some point, the swivel hardware was removed and the vise was brazed to the base (at an odd angle, I might add).

Why the fool did not just remove it from the base and bolt it down I do not know. It was free, so I really can't complain.

I have a small lathe on the left side of the bench, so the vise is on the right. Not really an ideal setup, so I plan to move it.

Right now it's mounted on the left corner with the drill presson the right corner... I've always had the vise there... so I'm used to it. I don't there's any right or wrong answer.

With a 10' bench, if I'm out of space it means I need to clean... :lol_hitti

My preference has always been on the right corner of the bench for some reason.

I have always found it to be a pain to have a vise mounted on the bench. It always seems to be in my way when I'm not using it and I alwas want to be on the bench side of it at one time or another.

I recently built a vise stand out of a 4" piece of pipe, a few angle iron clips, and a piece of scrap 3/8" plate. Cut the plate to the shape of the vise base and welded it to one end of the 4" pipe. Then coped the angle iron clips to the side of the pipe to make 3 feet for the pipe. I drilled 3 1/2" drop in anchors in the floor and bolted it down. mounted it on the inside side of a support post so it won't get in the way for parking on either side. If after a while I decide I don't like it I can just unbolt it and patch the holes from the anchors.
I'll try to get a picture of it tomorrow

I only have one hand. I often need to "hold" stuff to allow me to work on it. My brother made me a HEAVY DUTY stand that I can move around as some times I put cylinder heads or stuff in it to work on.. mounted on bench would interfer with it.... works good I use it a lot since I'm umm... short handed...

That is a nice shade of blue, but don't you ever get tired of everything benches ,boxes, shop tools etc being the same color? Like I said, nice shade of blue but for me variety is the spice of life! To each his own

Just yesterday I finished reassembling and re-mounting my workbench vise. It is an old, 1950's Craftsman 5 inch that had been painted flat black sometime in the past. I disassembled it, degreased it, bead blasted each piece, and masked and painted the parts, greased it up and reinstalled it.

I bought a gallon of Rustoleoum Navy Grey from Home Depot on clearance for $10. Until that gallon is used up, everything in the shop that needs painting, gets painted navy grey. After that, it will be whatever color I get on clearance next time......................

So far, its been six different five ton jackstands, a six foot Lyons metal workbench, and the vise, I have a fair amount of Grey left:)

I’m right handed and ideally I would prefer a vice on the right end of a workbench. I have two six foot workbenches that face each other and about four feet apart. The ends are against a wall, and placed the vices on the isle ends for maximum access. Therefore I have one mounting on the right hand side and the other on the left hand side. I placed my smaller Craftsman 5" on the bench with my machinist’s tool boxes. I do more delicate work there, and I don’t want to rattle my tools off their perch. My larger Columbian is where I do heavier work, and unfortunately it ended up on the left.
