Hey guys, I'm looking for some advice on getting a vise.

Requirements:
4" jaw or larger
$500 or less(would like to be closer to 2-300)
MUST be made in USA
Would like to have pipe jaws but not a necessity.

I really like the wilton vises and have been keepin an eye out lately for something that fits my criteria. What would you all recommend?

Also, I found this one that's about 40 miles away, not sure what the going rate is on a 4" wilton bullet... http://stockton.craigslist.org/tls/3643141077.html

Thanks GJ!

That Wilton is a little high but it has new vise jaws which are not cheap. If you need a vise right now it's worth it in my opinion, try to get him down to about $150. Tracy is just south of Stockton right? I used to be stationed at Castle AFB by Merced.

Around here that is not an unrealistic price for that Wilton. Don't be afraid to make an offer, but do it in person, not in Email of the phone...

Ya, Tracy is just south of Stockton. That posting is in north Stockton and I'm in west Tracy so it's about 35 miles each way for me to go check it out.

Exactly what I was thinking, I just need to find time to go look at it.

Thanks guys, any other thoughts or suggestions let me know. I appreciate the input.

That price isn't bad. For comparison, my boss just bought a new vise for about $250. Sure its got 6" jaws, but its smaller than that wilton, came from a far away land over seas, and surely won't live 1/10 of the time that wilton already has. If you need a vise now, it'd probably be a good idea to go meet up with that wilton.

Yost Multi-Purpose Reversible Combination Vise, Swivel Base, 865-DI. Has Regular jaws, Pipe Jaws, It's Reversible for larger Capacity, Made from 65,000 PSI Ductile Iron. USA Made. List is $457 on Yosts website. http://www.yostvises.com/mechanics-...-reversible-combination-vise-swivel-base.html This is a video showing it,
Usually available elsewhere at a lower price, Northern tool has it for $300, http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200459123_200459123 Woodcraft has it for $350, http://www.woodcraft.com/product/20...se-reversible-mechanics-vise-model-865di.aspx if you have a local franchise. Admittedly this is the Vise I want, but I figured it might suit you even thought it's not the same type of design as the Wiltons. There is also an 8" size. Pics stolen from Yosts website.

$200.0 for that #4 Chicago Wilton with a swivel base is well worth it. That vise is around 40 years old and looks to be in great shape. Those jaws were purchased at $55.0, I know because I build and sell them. You will not be disappointed if you pick up that vise. I wish it was close to me.

6 1/2" at 49 lbs? Did you guys see that video? Everything being equal, I'd buy a USA Columbian. It looked cheap and clanky in the video. 1 yr. warranty? Almost any Big Box store vise will last you one year. I'm not a huge fan of the Wilton Tradesman but an equal 1765 would have it all over that Yost. Make your next vise purchase your last.

4" Wiltons were going for crazy money on eBay about 6 months ago... prices have dropped a little lately and I've seen a few go for closer to $150. Print off a couple of eBay SOLD listings and bring them along.... $200 isn't too far off but you might be able to get him down a little. I have an early one and it's very very nice to work with.

I'd probably be inclined to pass on the wilton the vise looks very well worn it looks like it was a factory dog to me............... But if you need a vise it would not be a bad choice at all.

Thanks for the link, and thank you for all the input guys! I'll probably try to make it out to look at the vise this Saturday assuming the guy still has it. It's been a busy work week and I don't see it letting up until the weekend...

Just a little more info, I don't NEED this vise or any vise for something right this minute. But there are some projects that I'd like to have a vise for plus I'm always working on something and wishing I had a nice strong vise. I've been meaning to add a vise into the garage since I got the bench setup.

Does anyone have any more input on the wilton tradesman 1765 style vise? Anything to worry about with those or should I just keeping looking used? I honestly never thought to check eBay for a vise, I'll have to keep an eye out there now also.

I have a Snaopn 1765, same vise as the tradesman and its great, one of my favorite tools. It doesnt have quite have the classic style of the machinist bullet, but its very usable and tough vise. If you can get it under 300 I would say its a good deal

If I could find a 1765 for under 300, I'd probably ****** it up right now.

Last Nov Zoro had the 1765 for under $300 shipped IIRC, watch this year's black friday for a 40% off coupon

I got a 1755 but it was smaller than I thought it would be, ended up with a REED 204 1/2 for $65 I picked up locally.
