I have just acquired a Wilton 645 vise and after minor repairs it works great. Would like to prime and paint. Before that I would like to ask of any suggestions on how to smooth/repair the years of abuse in the attached picture?

(I have the jaws removed)

I am sure I will have other questions soon.

Thanks for all info,

Will

Will: one reason i started the vise repair 101 thread is so members wouldn't have to look at thousands of threads to find the answers given to questions like yours. any chance you can post up your questions also over on the 101 thread so others that have the same issue can learn without spending hours searching for the answers?

also i'm pretty sure we've covered this several times over on the 101 thread if you have time to read it a little. a lot of guys like to leave the marks so the old vise has a little character from it's past. others like to smooth it out with JB Weld or Devcon or other products. before painting.

i personally like to use BLO (boiled linseed oil) on my vises either on a stripped/naked vise or on top of the old paint if it's original and just needs a little more protection.

good luck
