Found a dirt cheap vice today at an estate sale. And it's not Chinese!

But the base threads are stripped and it kinda useless.

Can the base be rethreaded and a new tightening screw be installed?

This is the screw that draws the jaws together.

Didn't want to drop a few bucks but if it is repairable, I'll be back there tomorrow.

A picture would help. I imagine the tap if a 5/8 to 1" V thread is more expensive than the vise.

It depends on the type of thread also, an acme or buttress thread is likely not repairable due to tap style. Does it even have material to tap?

Depends on the vise in question, price, what all it really needs and your skill set. No offense to you, but the fact that you asked this question in the first place, it might be more of a project than your current skills and or tools would be capable of. It would be a good learning experience no doubt, but just up to you if you want to put in the time/effort and $.

IF all it really needs is a main nut, again depending on the vise you may luck into someone parting their vise out. However if it needs other parts (and a worn screw would indicate lack of maintiance and or lots of use) it may be a sink hole project.

It's only $2 due to it's issue. The thread does indeed look special (the thread crown tip is flat) and I can't get it apart enough to tell if it's the worm shaft stripped, the bore or both. It does turn freely though.

Oh well....nuttin ventured....

Thanks all.

For the $2 I'd probably buy it, but I'm a sucker for trying to revive sad old equiptment. What brand or model is it?

For 2 bucks, I'd buy it and if you have a buddy that's a machinist, he might be able to fix you up.

Don't forget that ferrous metals are bringing about 8 cents a pound as scrap nowadays. If that vise weighs 50 pounds you'd double your money!

I too am a sucker for lost causes and can't count how many I've acquired over time for future "restoration." No big loss on that price, and if American made, perhaps the vise deserves a little TLC. If nothing else it will make for good garage "art" if it has a unique design or character.

Well, I went back and got it since it 50% off today. But it sure was a hassle to get in/out at this poorly planned Estate Sale.

It's rough, seen some hammerin' and is fixable - I hope. $1.00 out the door.

It's Rock Island 505A.

Ah, that might be a pain to fix. I thought you were talking about a non exposed screw vise that has a separate nut. If the nut in that is truly stripped, it will be alot of work to either fill itup and retap or bore it out to something else.

At worst it would make a cool desktop display.

Hello, I have a Parker #59 Bench vise. The Clamp that holds the screw in place is broken, I don't have the missing piece. Anyone know where I can get a replacement? Also, how about jaw pads?

This is the piece I am needing:
<a href="http://s1377.photobucket.com/user/mike_emery1/media/IMG_20140713_200235_zpsd2b999da.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/ah58/mike_emery1/IMG_20140713_200235_zpsd2b999da.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_20140713_200235_zpsd2b999da.jpg"/></a>

And here are the dimensions:

Anyone else spot the missing jaw face and broken jaw perches?
Sounds like an Acme thread. Your best bet is to buy a matching nut and affix it to the back of the stripped nut. Would pretty much have to be brazed or welded. I know you can buy Acme-threaded rod ... I'm assuming nuts are available too.

A better use is probably to separate the dynamic jaw from the rest and make a pair of bookends. Someone on GJ did that and they look pretty sharp. (ColtZantop, maybe??)

How are the threads? They look rounded
If the threads are good then you can find an acme nut that will fit. I would bore out the back side of the threaded hole in the vise and turn the replacement nut round on the outside and the press it in place.

But if you only paid $1 I'm liking the idea of cutting it up and making it into bookends

+1
That's as good of a fix as it comes. Turn the nut round for the depth of the press, leaving a little shoulder that you can weld/braze just for insurance. You're back in bizness......all for a buck and a little time on the weekend. :bounce:

On blacksmithing forums I've seen guys cast a new nut for leg vises.

I think they wrapped brazing rod around the thread of the screw, put it in the striped nut, capped it with clay and heated it in forge. The brazing rod melts and forms a new threads matched to the screw.

Your not out much if it fails, have fun experimenting.
