Here is my first attempt at restoring a vise. I bought this at an auction for $4 and it was is horribly rough shape. I soaked it in cider vinegar for a few days and repainted it. The only issues I had is the bare metal did not stay shiny. If anyone has any tips please let me know. Also, is there anyway to know what kind or brand this vise is? I looked and saw no markings or stamps anywhere. Thank you.

great thank you so much. I know it's not as pretty as most on here, but it was a lot of fun to see what it can be transformed into.

Kerosene. :) Your mineral spirits equates to our white spirit or turpentine substitute.

One thing I have oft wondered, whlst we're on this line of topic. What do you call methylated spirit across there, (the stuff which is purple in colour)?

Fretters: not sure exactly what you are talking about, but maybe turpentine? Jake or Outlaw seem to be up on their chemicals today so maybe they'll have a quick answer if mine isn't correct. or maybe they will verify my guess.

cheers

Drivesitfar, go ahead and pour a glass of denatured and see how that turns out for you. ;)

The DENATURED part is an additive that makes it toxic to humans, you buy it in the paint section at a hardware store.

Jake: so would that be everclear or moonshine?

From the wiki link I posted :
Denatured alcohol, also called methylated spirits or spiritus, is ethanol that has additives to make it poisonous, extremely bad tasting, foul smelling or nauseating, to discourage recreational consumption.

If you're that hard up, you'd be safer swilling Listerine.

Jake and ZK: i wanted to put a smiley face and it wasn't on the first page of my emoticons. thanks for the warning though and i'm far past my days of drinking moonshine or even Crown Royal or Listerine or i even heard some thought transmission oil could give them a buzz. :D

seriously i did hear that moonshine could take the paint off a car or maybe that was a rumor/legend. :dunno:

Fretters: i thank you for letting me know what your paraffin was in our language or terms.
