Vise stand done...

Here is my Vise stand for my yost 6'' took an old bus wheel welded 3/8 flat stock to top and bottom with a 4'' tube 1/4 thick for the post.....

Nice work! Do you attach/bolt that thing down to the floor? I've always wondered about that type of vise stand. I've always had mine bolted to my bench.

Believe it or not its heavy enough to stay put..

Cool! It would be nice to have a movable vise but I would hate to knock that sucker over with the forklift.
What colors are you going to paint the vise/stand?

Nice work! I would only suggest getting rid of the sharp corners on the top. Those things are rough when you bump into them.

Those welds are terrible! Kidding. Between the precision cut circle (I assume plasma table) and the quality of welds, I assume you are a professional? Which welding process did you use?

I think cutting the top plate to the same shape as the vise footprint would look good and prevent bumping into sharp edges.

Maybe you could weld a plate on the bottom of the wheel then fill it with sand or concrete? Looks good anyway.

Nice job, I like working with tube steel.I have mine on 4" schedule 40 pipe. I welded
some 2'' pipe 2" long on the pipe for hammers and whatever. I always have
something in them.

With that round base does it rock? Weld 3 heavy washers at 120 degrees under the wheel.

I actually bought the circle cut and the square plate off e-bay, now that its done i wish i would've had it cut it to the footprint due to the fact i do not have a plasma cutter...

you say it is not heavy enough for the vice as it still moves around however it would make a nice base for a bench grinder

I have a similar unit and really like the portability. On mine I have a slightly larger top plate and really like the ability to have a place to set tools or parts right at the vise. I also have the height near the height of the bench vice so that I can support long stuff in the two vises. Also if your looking to make one of these consider a truck brake drum instead of the wheel as the drum has a lot more mass to it.

What if you were to clamp some heavy metal in a lopsided way? Wouldn't it tip?

Every tool has it's strong points and it's weak points. The portability of the stand does mean it may be prone to tipping. If you have a piece that may cause tipping issues, then I would recommend clamping it in a vise mounted to a table. I assume with a vise on a stand like this it isn't your only vise.

You built a very nice stand sir! I chose to plate the bottom of my stand and fill the base with 100lbs of steel shot used for media blasting. The entire unit weighs roughly 225-250lbs. The only change I would make to yours is contour the shape of the plate that the vise mounts too!
