this is an older Cman fixed-base vise, appears to be in good condition, but could use a cleaning. It weighs about 30lbs, and has 3-1`2" jaws. The guy was asking $100, based on his ebay searches, but knows that is not realistic in this area. What is a fair value for this vise- it is a Columbian. Thanks.

If you go by ebay and nothing is wrong with it, he will probably get all of a hundred, plus...

Plus the buyer will pay shipping...

Depends how bad you want it and what you are going to do with it...

Put it this way, baring any damage, it's a very nice vise...

I'm sure I didn't help at all!!! Sorry...

Good Luck!

Agree, $50 tops. Although it does look to be in pretty good condition, it is really basic and pretty small. I MIGHT do $60 if I had to, but definitely not $100.

I'd give $60, looks in great shape and really how many times do you release the clamp's to swivel the vise. I use vises from one end of the shop to the other and can not remember when I moved a swivel. But that is me. I think swivel bases are over rated. Of course I would want the jaws to make a print.

The only time I ever even use a vise, is to fix other vises...

I actually prefer the solid feel of a fixed-base vise...and I think it will go well with my old drill press. As you may have guessed, I don't really need it, but...

It's pretty nice to me, and it seems to be in good condition and it's crown top. I'm sure some craftsman nuts on here would love to have it. What's the worst he can say if you offer 50$ ??? No? Then he might say 60$... Just try

That vise is "almost" like this catalog page...I don't think that vise is as heavy as these, but it's still a mighty nice vise...

I'm searching for a 5197 and/or a 5198...

"We Think" they were made by Columbian from the late 40' until the late 50's...

On ebay, $100.00 + freight...CL/Local purchase...$50.00 is the right money...

Nice vises, good luck...

That's not the one, that is a much heavier duty and older vise.

It's this one (68 catalog):

well, here it is, before and after a quick steel wool and WD40 bath. Anyone know what the closest color would be to "touch it up?"

As to color, on my monitor at least, looks like a dead ringer for Plasticote T10 Machinery Gray.

^^^ This

You can't just leave us hanging!

okay, okay. Per the suggestions here, I went full pop...fiddy bux! So far, it works great, very solid with the fixed base, jaw faces are almost like new. A few cosmetic issues, but I don't think this vise has seen much action.

This seems like the appropriate thread to ask about this Athol.

http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/tls/3939072964.html

Think there is any talking down in price from $250?

Oooo... A toolmaker's vise (not to be confused with the sheetmetal vise)... $250 is way too high, don't know the size though so it's hard to give a price... I would give *at least* $100 for rarity & decent condition...

As for the Cman, that's a great deal! Yeah looks machine gray to me too, but in all honesty I say just leave it as-is and wipe it down with some oil or paste wax.

Yeah that era Craftsman seems to use the "tool Grey" a lot. (sort of a semi gloss grey but more durable than regular paint in my experience) But I would also vote for a good cleanup and use it...
