Vise value question

Since we seem to have some pretty smart folks on vice info .. how would you price a used but newer USA vice? I have found what I think is an 8" wilton tradesman, that is said to be only a few years old and in near new condition. No photos, so I can't be certain. Looking online, I see they sell new for around $1000, so how would you put a value to this? I know most of what you guys seem to be finding deals on are older vices, so not sure how to put a price or price per pound value on what may be a fairly new quality vice.

Hi, in buying a Wilton, you must ask for any and all numbers on that vise. Many sellers determine the size by how far it opens. You might think you are buying an 8" vise only to find out that its an older 4" vise that opens over 7". Also Wilton refers to many of their exposed beam vises as Tradesman, Those you want to stay away from. Ask if it had an enclosed channel, a Bullet Vise as they say. If its has a enclosed channel and for sure, the width of the jaws are 8'. It will be either a 1780 or the huge 240 lb 800S or N. Ask if I person can move it, chances are its a 1780 and right now, on Ebay their is a new 1780 going for $250. If they say its huge and its a two person project then its worth the ride to see exactly what condition its in. Nice condition, I'd pay $1.00 a lb.

Well, this is said to be an 8x8 machinist vise. In looking on the Wilton site, they don't make an 8x8 machinist that I find. I asked, and was told it was an enclosed body with pipe jaws. So, in the catalog I found a tradesman 8x7, model 1780A. Without a picture, it's very hard to know what exactly it is. Was wanting 450 to begin with a few weeks ago, now asking 350. That's still more than I can spend.

I guess my main question isn't so much what's the best price for an old vice, but rather how well do newer vices hold their value. If, in fact, it is a 1780A, the wilton site lists that for 980 with it on sale right now for 750. How fast do they drop in value overall, if treated well?

What I want, is to buy it for $100! :)

If you can look at the new 1780 on Ebay for $250, and spend more and buy it, and if he won't come down, you are not going to find an 8" Bullet for $100 unless you are very patient..maybe.

I would love for you to show us the new 1780s on ebay for $250 (including shipping I assume, if we're price comparing to local buys).

All I see are 1765s going for near twice that. New 1780 for $250 would be an exceptional bargain.

I have sold used 1755s and 1765s for more than that and people were happy to pay it.

I price newer vises like I price newer used tools. About half of the very best new deal I can find. This is the highest price I will pay if I will be using the vise myself. Otherwise, I go less.

Look out for deals. I bought a 1780 made in 2001 about a year ago for $200 cash. It is the vise in my avatar. It is in MINT shape.

That's what I'd like to get this one for, as I can't really afford any more than that. The fella said $350 was his lowest price, though. Course, he's been trying to sell it for over a month now, so one never knows.
