Vise weight

Well this site has now caused to me believe I need an older vise haha Now I'm looking to get a 1957 wilton C1 vise shipped and was needing to get a rough estimate on weight prior to pulling the trigger. Does anyone have a good guess on this? Also rough dimensions would help as well.

All of these variables will make it difficult to give you an exact price.

i think they are about 65 pounds for a Wilton C1 if that might help, but sorry i've owned 3 or 4 and don't own one now to get you measurements. here's a picture of the C2 i should have kept that is one a GJ member's bench and looking even better with the surface rust off it.

it's a great vise, but a C2 is about 110 pounds and bigger. just saying.

pretty sure a C1 won't fit in a USPS flat rate box, but maybe a member that ships wiltons all the time will post their thoughts soon.

USPS tops out of 70 lbs so the vise plus packaging would possible make it over that amount so that leaves fedex or ups. If anyone has any tips for how to package one of these I would greatly appreciate it. Also what would be a fair price from something in good condition?

I have shipped a few big vises and UPS is the way to go just for cost reasons, I would take a piece of just cheap plywood and bolt it down, then use something in each corner, I use 2x2s and cut them so they go almost to the top of the box and then top it off with another piece of plywood and wrap the handles with bubble wrap and tape them so they can't move. This adds some weight to the package but will insure it will get there safe.

That will be a Chicago-era model. Mine is about 18L x 9.5H x 8.5W. Weighs closer to 75 lbs.

Could be either if it's a 1957, first year for new plant at Schiller Park.

Appreciate the links of dimensions and weight. Yes this one does have a Chicago identification on the side. $300 is the asking price which seems somewhat high to me but I would be open to any advice on how much one should pay for an item like this. I'm a novice when it comes to valuing these things so any help or guidance would be appreciated.

MEYER: i've sold C1's for more than $300 so post up some pictures cause condition is everything if you want to know value.

EX: i've owned 4 C1's and not a one weighed 75 and i had two Chicago versions and one was 1945 which i think is the one you have. did your 1945 weigh 75 pounds? i was guessing 65 which i think is still maybe on the high side so maybe somebody has one or a few to weigh in on this thread.

Correction this isn't a Chicago vise...I had it mixed up with another one. I'll post pics whenever I figure out how to do so.

Meyer: do you have the pictures downloaded to your laptop or cell phone? i click on the paperclip just above where you write your posts and attach pictures sort of like attaching pictures to an email. ok? some online picture hosting sites don't work on GJ so we try to have everybody just download their pictures directly to GJ if possible.

ask questions if you need help and BTW welcome to the forum if i didn't already say so.

Wilton's best vises in my opinion are there C series vises and a C1 is about perfect for almost any homeowner and even the pros.

also if you want to go in your GJ profile you can put in an area and sometimes some one of the members might be selling a vise or tool you might need and you wouldn't always have to pay shipping. also click on AVATAR and you can download a picture that goes under your handle like i have a Buffalo made of steel scraps and tools for mine and you can change it if you find a better one later.

Meyer: that C1 with the double pins is one of my favorite models Wilton made so you have my vote to buy it. i think i paid close to what the guy is asking for the first C1 i bought like that maybe 5 or more years ago.

i know you said this was a going to be shipped so maybe getting more pictures with the dynamic jaw out of the vise and from all angles and also the bottom would be nice. and guessing shipping costs would be in the $75 range with UPS, FED EX or DHL, but i haven't shipped small vises for a while. if you ever need to ship a 150+ pound vise i'd use Fastenal's shipping and put it on a crate/pallet to ship it for a lot less than what other companies charge.

if you were able to see the vise in person here's what i would do. I'd just make sure it's not welded or cracked anywhere and since you can unscrew out the dynamic all the way to check it for damage and see the vise nut with it out (don't drop it when unscrewing it out) and if no damage that looks like a good vise.
