I think you are correct... it is a vise!

Looks like a Wilton, should perform well.

Good deal if it all works. That may be one of the home owner Wiltons, nothing wrong with that. The vise is probably better than anything you will get at HF.

Ask if it's marked USA on it. Some of them are Chinese and best avoided.

if it is marked USA buy it. Looking at vises yesterday many American made are 2-300+ as long as it is not cracked or damaged in any way it will serve you well and you are not adding to the china economy...

I just saw it but don't know anything about the classic vises. If it was something special, I'd pick it up but I have no real need for it. I have to build my bench before I start upgrading vises.

It's an older Wilton 745 from a few decades ago. Many have cast-in "made in USA" on side of rear jaw. Very nice, rugged mechanics vise if in good shape. It would serve you very well for automotive as that is what it was designed for.

Thanks, airbuff! What is the span on one of those? My current 4" King really limits the jobs I can do. Also, any idea what one should pay given no cracks or major damage?

The jaws are 5" wide and I think mine opened to a bit over 5". They made 744 & 746 as well (4" & 6" jaws) but it looks like the most popular 745 in your link.
I just sold a nice one that was refurbished for 75.00 locally. I think that was a pretty good price and I probably could have got a bit more. They aren't as well known as the bullet vises and tend to be overlooked by many, also the newer 740 series are imported so guys git scairt.....
