For you all that prefer your vises to be "au naturel", how do you protect them against any surface rust?

Wax, drool on some motor oil, linseed oil, clear lacquer or other?

I don't think this guy has ever had paint from the factory so I'd like to keep it this way but with some added protection.

Thanks

Johnson's paste wax will work and after it dries won't be shiny.
Vise in second picture was cleaned a little better before the wax was put on. Everthing sticks to oil but if you keep it wiped down it works also.

in the first picture..... i have seen that "ball joint" type nut on the swivel of a few different vises. is that an original fastener, how does it work? pull up and swivel vise or turn to loosen and swivel vise?

Paste wax here, Johnsons to be specific.

I just give mine the odd spray with CRC and wipe over once a week.

Is that a homemade vise? It almost looks like it is made of plate steel, with the sharp corners and what appears to be a weld between the base. :dunno:

There's usually always some oil or ATF dripping down my nekkid Wiltons at work. I usually just take a rag and smear em' down in whatever's already on them. I've been using them nearly 17 years but they've been there way longer than me. No rust yet.

My old Reed vise is a workhorse not a show piece. Original patina & lemon Pledge furniture polish.
