Vises: Replaceable pipe jaws---how to replicate factory black finish?

Like with Wilton pipe jaw inserts or some of the combination vises like, of memory serves the Columbian m3 series pipe jaw inserts, if your cleaning an old one that's been painted or got rusty or whatever, how could you replicate that black (oxide?) finish ?

i mean in a way that it's not a coating that will come off on the workpiece...like paint, etc.

What about bluing them? I have bought gun bluing in a bottle. Works pretty good and is good and dark. Like this:

Bluing or parkerizing is your answer.

Cold blue like the Birchwood Casey stuff is going to give you a bluish color, not really black and then they'll rust pretty easily. Parkerizing is normally going to give you a gray/green color, but it appears there are now some kits that will produce a black finish. You can actually buy black oxide kits that will work at home.

The problem with most of those is that they aren't very cost-effective if you're only doing a part here and there.

Precision makes a true cold black system. Step one is a degreaser and i am sure another one would work. Step two is the blackening chemical and it works very fast and then rinse with water and scrub off any residue with a brush. No good for hardened steel or stainless. Step three is some oil type rust resistant spray and probably nothing special. The coating is pretty durable but depends on a top coat for serious rust protection. After rinsing, repeated application is possible if it is not black enough. It works pretty well

Also you can try heating it with a torch and dunking it in old oil too.
