Hello

I thought i'd post some pictures of my old Vono vice/vise, I've had it a few years, I don't really know anything about the manufacturer or indeed the model itself. It does however an unusual front jaw that can be swivelled.

It's a big, lovely old thing, any information on it gratefully received.

I hope the pics come out ok !

Many thanks :)

It's a woodworker vise, but it doesn't look like it was installed to be used as such. The top edge should locate just below the surface of the bench, and there should be no nuts/bolts protruding above the benchtop. And of course there should be wood (or plywood) faces screwed to the vise jaws.

A pattern maker's vise. Any pictures from underneath? I'm curious if it tilts as well as swivels like the American style.

Hello

exmaxima1 - Thanks for the input, yes i know it's mounted wrong but to be honest I don't really do that much woodworking so I just bolted it through the steel top of the workbench (but you are absolutely right & thanks for that :)) It weighs a lot so i was just concentrating on not getting a hernia at the time

PBCampbell - Thanks for that, (sorry to be dumb but how does that actually work/what would it involve making a pattern of ? ) It doesn't tilt, it does have a quick release feature & the front jaw as you can see that can be angled (but not locked in any way when it is angled ??):)

Cheers very much for the replies, much appreciated.

The molds for casting metal parts were made from forming around wood carvings of the part for decades. Think engine parts, gears, cases, etc.
Google "Emmert pattern maker's vise" to see examples of a popular American type.
It sure looks like yours should be able to rotate the jaws at the very least.
I know on the American ones the tilt lock mechanism is often missing, discarded with the bench it was mounted to.

Hello

Thanks very much for the info' concerning pattern making much appreciated. I've been googling Emmert's, very cool I want one !

I've posted a few more pictures from underneath etc & also one to show how wide it opens (around 12 inches).

I initially thought it might rotate as the slide on it is curved but the way the quick release fits through the casing would appear to render that impossible.

Many thanks

Dave:)
