VW 1.9L TDI timing tools

What all is needed for timing a 1.9L TDI in a beetle, about an 2001? I'm trying to help a buddy and see how much it's going to cost to fix his beetle that the timing belt broke on. I see assenmacher sells a kit for 250 or so. But when I searched ebay there were some 20 dollar kits. This is most likely a one time use but I also want to buy the right tools. Any advice on what all I will need for this? The timing belt broke while in idle in a parking lot. So hoping not to much damage but will send the head out to be gone through.

It's nice to have the whole kit but you can get by with just the cam holder. It'll be interesting to see what it looks like inside. Post pics.

The kit I used was a flat plate notched to fit the end of the cam & a pin to lock the injector pump. Make sure you use a complete timing belt kit, It should include a idler pulley,a water pump and the necessary torque to yield bolts. I believe Gates offers a 100k belt now. The hardest part is getting the plastic covers off the timing blt area and a couple of the flat style hose clamps are a pain unless you have a pair of remote pliers. You should also pull the intake manifold, they get choked full of carbon deposits from the egr vslve

Before you buy tools, you need to realize that there WILL be damage. Head must come off. There will be bent or broken valves. There may be damaged pistons, damaged combustion chambers, and/or damaged cylinders. Don't invest in tools until you take the head off (or tell your buddy what he/you are getting into).

With the amount of tools that site sells just for timing, that job looks like a nightmare

It is not a nightmare , maybe a bit stressful . There is a lot riding on it .
A broken/slip timing belt usually (almost always) means a bent valve or two . You also could have a Ruined piston and Bent connecting rod.
The timing belt job has to be done exactly right .

Yup, I have a 2000 Tdi that had a belt break. Had two bent valves and that was it I think. Had the head looked over and rebuilt just in case.

Metalnerd is a great resource. Its a big job but a skilled mechanic can do it. Just start telling yourself the diesel smells good.

"about" 2001 is not an model year.....

Actually, the 2001 beetle came with either a AGR, ALH or ATD- engine.....

You can rent the tools here for $45 plus deposit which is what I did the first time I ever changed one.

After that, i loosely copied the design for the cam plate and made my own. That and a 15/64" drill bit to hold the injection pump are the only things you really need. Everything else, use a little ingenuity and you'll be just fine. I've done several timing belt changes on ALH's with absolutely no problems once so ever using just those two tools.

You can go to the VW forums and ask this question and you will have 1000 keyboard mechanic's give you several hundred reasons why you need to have the "proper" tools even though the majority of them take their vehicles to a shop for someone else to work on.
