Hello, and thanks for visiting. My last 2 garages were slightly longer and had more workspace. This one will be tricked out with maximizing space efficiency and include a bar for entertaining.

I'm into balancing cost, function, and form. I like to utilize reclaimed pallets for walls. I plan of finishing the gyp board ceilings and paint white with exposed cross boards in the peak for running wires. Speaking of which, this space is in need of some outlets and lighting. Only on outlet, and one light, ouch.

Repurposed peg board from the garage. Tomorrow I'm picking up the rest of my garage.

I plan on a 5000 lb lift jacks or something that can hang out of the way. Enough for what I need.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. I've seen a few garage doors that follow the roof slope instead of flat like mine. I am not married to anything the way it is right now. Got some research to do.

I'm currently getting ahead of myself with the project list. Another thing I need to look into, chainfalls used for attic hoist. I just need to have my structural engineer take a look at what's possible for mounting to the open roof (no trusses).

so how big is the shop area?

Roughly 18ftx28ft minus a 10sf area to one side for the 1/2 bath and closet just inside the door. I will soon get to know the house/garage more when I measure it out and draw it in Revit. Then I'm doing an energy analysis to weigh options for future envelope upgrades, starting with the attic insulation.

Still not unpacked at the new place. Finished picking up the rest of the garage today. One miracle happened, two of my new neighbors swung through my driveway with their snow blowers and cleared it and the sidewalk. My fridge will need a spot for there beers for the warm welcome.

Finally, getting back on track after a long hiatus (indoor projects). Had to assemble a little garden shed (prefab) to make room. Took down some shelves. Hung the vacuum and hose reel on the wall.

This month's plan is to clear off the floor and patch it. Currently has a bunch of salt damage on the surface and one bad pothole at the ovhd door. I picked up paint (beige, speckled), but always wanted a interlago plaid design on the floor so may be a protection step with getting down the paint, then the interlocking matts in the plaid design later.

I've also given up the reclaimed pallet wall idea since its a trend that I'm not in favor of anymore. Just clean sheet rock wall painted will be a good base.

Demo Day

Also had an pro electrician swing by and discuss a 50A service, and running outlets, lighting, and adding a outdoor outlet for some Xmas lights on the front. Able to pull both VW's in now. porch.

Finally feeling some progress coming along. Got some free kitchen cabinets and countertops today. Rented a Uhaul, and traveled 2hrs each way, but worth it. In a couple weeks I will have the electric done, and the compressor running.

I'm struggling with what precedent should direct the fitout. Should I think along the lines of best resale value in 20yrs, best clean detailer's space, maximize the height, or summer Italian living room (I'm not Italian, but everyone else is in my town).

I do like to wrench and wax, but would like company to hang out. So it may become a mix of everything. I figure the power-side and upgrading the service is key on resale.

If you're planning on staying for 20 yrs I'd build it the way you want it. I feel like most people by a house for the house, not the garage. And to most people, a garage is just a place to store junk or park cars. Any sort of nice garage build is often a bonus.

It looks like you have decent space to work with and can probably make it a space for wrenching, detailing, and hanging out (mix of everything) if you want. I wouldn't worry too much about what future buyers might like on that front.

Thanks for the input. Sometimes I say things, that only make sense after I say them. Got bored during lunch and had taken measurements this past weekend. I have some car guys/gals in-house to see what I can/should do structurally, if I can vault the space, and have the ovhd door rise with the roof pitch. Major concern is not enough collar ties at the moment.

Question. In the last pic I posted, the stick wall sits on a short CMU 'toekick'. It sticks out about 1.5". What can I do to the base cabinets (Lowe's pre-manufactured) to make them sit flush? Do I need to carry the dimension up to the top of the backsplash by furring out the wall for this to work? Or do I rip some 2x2's and bring the walls out flush? I have the drywall up already, but would value some advice after-the-fact.

Would a little extra height for the countertop/bench be helpful? If so, build a platform to set the cabinets on that allows them to be placed against the wall.

Cupboards are going in. I plan on notching the back-bottom to accommodate the block at the floor. I picked up some treated deck boards to make frames for underneath so I can level the base cabinets.

Next steps will involve making both bays available, building shelves in the garden shed, window shopping for a R8, install the cabinets and countertops (finally), and tackle the compressor enclosure and run the lines.
