Wafer led code question.

The latest wafer LEDs thread got me thinking.

I wanted to install wafers in my remodel which was partly a tear down so there was new framing where I wanted to put them.

I asked the inspector and he said he would not sign off the rough in because of the “loose end” wires so I put in the cans.

NEC 2014 was in effect.

Was he right?

Just having the power suppling nm hanging there with nothing connected.

Just NM hanging there in the ceiling? Yeah, he was probably right.
You can connect the NM to the driver box of the wafer light and then let the low voltage cord dangle. That would normally satisfy him.

I have a remodel in progress and we used low profile LED recessed lights from HD. They came with a small square metal junction box (cigarette package size) that we screwed to a floor joist, and that left a low voltage wire hanging from the junction box. Inspector had no problem with that for rough in inspection.

We estimated the location for each light and kept track of measurements before drywall was installed. Then went back with a 4 1/8" hole saw to cut the holes afterwards. These lights are so thin that only the spring clips stick up into the joist bay, so we were even able to install one that straddled the floor joist above.

Another way I've seen this done is just leaving a 'loop' at the approximate locations you plan on installing the wafer...just leave a few feet extra....You would still have to terminate the end of the cable in a box, but that would be it....
