Wal-Mart tool board

View attachment 1589462 so today I was at Wal-Mart fleet maintenance facility. The mechanic all use identical company supplied tool boards ,no personal tools allowed. I was told this was done to stop the my box is bigger than yours attitude. Has anyone else seen these boards they are shadow boxed in a sense. Well laid out in my opinion. Larger tools are kept in the tool locker and signed out as needed. Any input on this idea?

sounds like a great idea to me! prevents "borrowing" of tools and unhappy workplace. tool breaks, Walmart buys a replacement, not the tech or his buddy that broke it. easy to get to tools, no digging for it, it's right in front of you. I'd be willing to bet efficiency has gone way up

Geartow, thanks for sharing. This is a cool thread! CGarage, I’ve see. Those types of boards before. They strike me as very efficient and easy to mod the layout.

Or that one line they carry called Hyper Tough? :) I do own a Hyper Tough case, though. I saw a brand new discarded one on top of the trash at a rest stop 10 years ago. I guess the person emptied out the tools into their own toolbox and tossed the case.

But heck any tools are better than none. I've helped friends/relatives with stuff and many don't even have a screwdriver.

I like the tool board idea. Makes sense. You can see what you are reaching for, what is missing, etc..

How do they code the tools to the boards? Spray paint or a tag or something? And what tools do they have to check out of crib?

Peg Board has its place in the shop. I use these hooks: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002FYYT74/?tag=atomicindus08-20 Make sure you use the 1/4" thick peg board, some places only have the 3/16" and the thicker works better with the screw. Kevin Are these truly as great as they appear...

I'm just surprised that wal mart does fleet maintenance :dunno: I thought they were just a quick lube/tires/batteries place.

I think it's more a the techs they hire might not have a lot of tools thing, than a my box is bigger than your box situation thing though.:beer:

For their own fleet. Walmart owns lots of trucks

Wonder what the stickers are made of to keep them attached to the tools during use. That’s pretty impressive really.

I agree, I have a small display rack from a dept store that my sister got and she's not using it anymore and i converted it to a tool rack/ supply rack, and it was more efficient for me to look for something rather than going thru all the cabinets and drawer to look for something

So several years ago I applied to work at Wal-Mart as a lube/tire tech. I got hired, but took a job elsewhere...
Anyway, during the interview the manager walked me around the shop and they had a similar setup. I don't recall the tool brands or any other specifics, but you were not allowed to use your own tools and could only use the tools Wal-Mart provided.

I thought that I read somewhere that all their shops only used Steelman brand tools.

That's a cool idea. Not having to buy personal tools yet having access to nicely organized company tools is a great perk. Current place I'm at is personal tools, last place was communal company tools. Communal company tools **** when there's no accountability or willingness to keep them organized. Personal tools are nice because you can use what you want/ buy what you think will make your job easier though I've got a ton of money in my work box. Company tools organized like that would be a great way to not spend all day figuring out where Ed left the 1/2" wrench.

I have a peg board in my wife's garage for her tools and it works great and was a lot cheaper than buying her a tool box.
