Walker 4ton Floor Jack Help

I have an older (late 50's, early 60's) Walker 4 ton Floor Jack Model 748 which I picked up about 5 years ago to work on my F350.

Jack has performed well with out any leaks on either the main ram, or either of the two pumping pistons. Only the filler plug (with a breather) leaks a little when you lower the jack.

However, recently (in the past month) the jack has failed to raise a load. Or it starts to raise and then slowly comes down. I checked the fluid, and added some, but still does the same.

I'm inclined to think it is one of the safety valves. Maybe something is under one of the seats, or one of the balls is gummed up or something.

Does anyone have any experience with Walker, and could provide me with some leads. Any help would be appreciated.

Hiball carries parts for Walker jacks; I just bought a repair kit for a Walker 782 from him. He will chime in tomorrow, most likely. Take a look at his thread on repairing import jacks and Elroy's HW jack repairs. They are great resources.

748? Possibly a 784? Anyways, Without taking the jack apart its nearly impossible to diagnose the problem. The overload on those jacks are fairly bullet proof, they dont back off very often and its the valve with the freeze plug over it. I wouldnt add any more oil, If its venting out the breather its overfull already. Its kinda tricky business to start investigating valves and checking for contaminents while in the frame and full of oil. My personal opinion is to tear the unit down, drain the oil and do a inspection. Of course this requires some tools including a big vise (capable of holding the unit) some general picks, pin spanners/hook spanners are handly and some patience. Again I dont recomend pulling valves while in the frame because there oil pressure will push the balls and spacers out of the holes when you break them loose. IF you your intenstions are to inspect the valves make sure the *** end is elevated so the oil is towards the ram and not the valve area. I dont see many valve problems with those jacks because most have a filter screens on the intake port to prevent contaminents from the resevoir, But it is possible to come from the pump end. Thanks for the feedback. While I understand your advice about pulling the hydraulics out of the frame, I'm going to try to tip the **** end up and remove and inspect the valves. I've got nothing to lose as the jack is now only so much iron.

One more question, I have a parts list for a later model J134 (93657) jack. Are the hydraulics the same in my 784? Can I use this parts list?

Lastly, my jack is indeed a 784. Dyslexia? Senior moment?

One more question, I have a parts list for a later model J134 (93657) jack. Are the hydraulics the same in my 784? Can I use this parts list?

There will be a few differences between a 784 and 93657, j134, 884. They all basically share the same hydraulic system but there will be a few differences.
