Ok so I have a chance to buy this old mechanical Walker jack. For cheap. Like $50 cheap. My question is are they safe? Is it worth the trouble? I know it would be an awesome restoration but I would kind of like to use it if I'm gonna store it. Anyone know anything about them?

Here's a picture of it.

It's about an hour or so away. Is it worth going to get for actually using it?

Safety is relative to the actual jack. I prefer vintage hydraulic jacks personally but there is no reason why you can't use a mechanical jack provided it's in good serviceable condition.

They are a very good jack, I still use mine. It is safer than a hyd. jack because it has mechanical stops. To lower it, flip the lever then jack it down with the handle one click at a time or get the handle swinging and it will jack itself down one notch at a time. Caution, it can hurt you if you get hit with the handle jacking itself down so just don't stand on top of the handle.

As with any jack, a safety jack stand or 2 should be used once you have the vehicle in the air. That's a real nice jack for the price. I have a mechanical Walker "roll a car" jack from the 1930's.

I've always wondered about these as I prefer the vintage hydraulics as well. Somebody tell me how these compare with hydraulics in "pump" effort.

370, I hope you got that jack. If you did, can you tell us the lift range?

Depending on what jack you are comparing it too, this one may be even easier to pump.

I use mine to jack up my Model A and love it. It is safer than a hydraulic one as there are seals to leak. However, even though I use it as a jack stand I also include separate stands just in case. They were designed to jack up cars that have large trunks in the back which is why they are so long. I guarantee you will love it. It can be a bit harder to jack the car up as you are use your arms and levers vs. hydro.

When jacking up something, put the handle in the lowest setting, that way you are using gravity and your weight and it isn't that hard.

Just picked up the jack. It's in good shape and it works! Not bad for $50!

I think that it could do it but it will be near the limit, try it.

I'll have to find some time to try it out. I know my old Walker 2 ton won't. But my dad's heim Warner 3 ton does.

I would love a long frame 4 ton for just that or
Purpose but don't have room to store much more until I get the building up.
