Took the day off from work today to buy this floor jack on CL for 5 dollars. Had to drive 100+ miles round trip to get her home. Got home, gave the floor jack a bath with my electric pressure washer. Then the pressure washer stopped working. I will have to tackle to trouble shoot the issues with the electric pump.
After cleaning up the floor jack, there seem to be a couple issues.
1. The cylinder has some surface rust
2. The universal joint must have broken, and the previous owner put a machine screw in it.

How do repair or fix the issues. Would it be safe to use steel wool to clean up the cylinder? Should the screw be removed and replace with a dowel?

The universal joint is very similar to the one shown in the picture below except for the small retaining ring. A small pin goes through a thicker pin. If you are able to reproduce that, replace the bolt; otherwise leave it as it is if it works.

To remove the rust from the ram you could use wet and dry sandpaper in 320 or 400 grit to begin and maybe polish it a bit with a cloth wheel as the ram surface, as well as the cylinder surface, should be polished to prevent premature wear of the seals. But be aware that if the condition of the ram is like that, the cylinder could be in similar shape. That would require honing the cylinder and how much depends on how much rust it haves, if any.

Since you washed the jack with a pressure washer, you may have introduce water in the pump. And maybe there is water in the pump already, because the pump has a free flow breather and it is easy for water to get in if the jack was left outside all the time.

If the jack had not been repaired before, and since this is an old jack, you may do well to replace the seals. That way you know you have a jack, with seals in good condition, that will perform as supposed and not give a nasty surprise later when lifting a car.

Below is the parts breakdown.

Nice Find... On the Plus side it appears that your Tank Nut has good spanner grooves and hasn't been subject to a Hammer and Punch in a attempt to Service without the proper tool. Its a Early Series, Should have a Leather Piston Seal on the Ram and while it still might work I would definitely Recommend a Inspection and then if warranted some Service. Here is a Good Tutorial from David that will give you a idea of what your dealing with on your jack. As far as the Universal Joint, You definitely need to secure those Ears to the Universal Block, Or the rotational force will snap on off, I can already see one is deformed quite a bit. If and When you get to the point you need a Seal Kit, Give Steve Flora a Call at 620-594-2247. I have been dealing with Him and his Wife for a Long time, He will treat you right.
