That said, I've been using one of these round slotted beasts to sit on my jack's 5" square saddle for use with whatever comes along including 'new tin model toys' and it seems to be pretty much indestructible. It definitely does the job.
Are the square pads made of steel or composite material?

For 30 bucks I would like to know what their "Extremely durable, patented material" is. Sounds like bullshiterium to me. If it is patented they are protected. No need to be so vague.If you are talking about the Protech square saddle pads I linked, they are soft and slip over your saddle. I'll let them explain ...
