Walker J134 4 ton jack question

I picked up a walker 4 ton jack that has issues. WhAt would you expect for $20. The question that I have is about the rod that allows you to lower the jack handle. I think the parts list calls it a plunger. The issue I have is that this plunger is broken off the end of the short rod. If I am able to get this part I am not clear on how this is released to be able to rotate to the next hole. The manual says to pull the know on the jack handle but that is connected to the long rod that rotated to lower the jack and not the short one. Can someone explain how this works. Thanks

Just follow the Manual, Pull the knob to change quadrants (with a plunger in tact of course). Inside the handle assemble near the bottom the long rod is connected to a cross piece/springs/secondary rod that slides up and down to allow you to change the angle you wish to pump.

Thanks Hiball. The manual refers to a release. I saw in one photo of a j134 restore that there appeared to be a tab on the release rod. Mine does not have that. I just cannot figure out what allows or pulls the shorter rod up. The two rods are connected with basically a thick felt washer but that does not appear to affect the movement of the short rod. Since the know on the handle is only directly connected to the release rod it seems like this does need to release or pull up the shorter rod somehow.

Probably kind of silly I am caught up on this when the real question is whether the jack can be rebuilt. The ram that is connected to the end of the jack that lifts is not scored but Gerry dull looking. Generally do they get worn so bad that they will not polish up? Is micing the ram the best way to tell?

It's been a while since inside a lower handle assembly, it's semi rare for things to go wrong, With that said the last time I was in there was because stud had broken. If memory Serves everything was held together by hard plastic material, versus a fiber material, then again it could be issue with series/age.

In regards to the rod finish, Gray is a normal appearance after years of use. The most important thing is to clean it up to take care of any rough edges, pitting etc. The Jack operates as a Piston application, the only job the rod has "in this case/location" is to contain any oil that possibly might bypass during startup, which should be minimal if your cylinder wall is clean/good seal.
