Walker Turner 4 spindle drill press

I have a chance to buy this drill press for $150. I was really just looking for some parts for a drill I bought a while back. I only have a home shop/garage so I really don't have a need for the whole unit. The guy said it was running several years ago when he put it in storage. Is there any reason why I can't wire one of the drills to run on 110? It is set up right now to run on 220 3 phase. Are the rest of them worth anything for parts?

you'd have to swap motors out, or run a vfd. i would get it and remove 2 or 3 of the drill heads and then you have a massive, strong table with lots of support for large parts

What is a vfd? I have an Walker Turner that runs on 110. I could easily get up and running with the parts on this unit and sell or scrap the rest.

It looks like it has a tapping head on one of the heads. It would be a great source of parts, but not the best solution for a drill press. I believe that the heads move up and down, and the table height isn't adjustable - IE it's not very flexible as a drill press.

I guess it all depends on what you need, and how much tinkering you are looking for.

You are correct one of them is a tapping head. I have been looking for parts but also looking for a metal bench. Thats where I am torn is it worth $150 to get the few parts I need plus bench/table. Other than that it is not real practical for me. I passed up on one of these before I bought my bench top Walker Turner. Plus I hate to see stuff like this get scrapped.

Going to try and get it for $100 but he may have some other items for sale so maybe a package deal. I don't see many parts for sale for these drills but the ones I do see are not cheap. Thinking that even at $150 I get my parts, plus the table, part out the rest and save it from the scrapper. Probably make back a few pennies on the parts.

What kind of work do you do in your shop? Do you have space for a machine like this? We have a four spindle drill in our machine shop, handy to have, would be even nicer if we had a tapping head, it's nice to be able to setup one head with a spot drill, one with pilot drill, one with size drill, and the last with a countersink or other tooling when you're doing repetitive work. Of course convenience comes at the expense of floor space in this case.

You'll need a phase converter or VFD to power it.

Well, not sure how you feel about parting it out, but if you're OK with parting out what you don't need, I'm fairly sure you can probably double your money on eBay for what these parts go for typically. Everybody wins that way.

My shop is my 24x24 home garage. I mostly work on automotive projects but I will basically work on anything. Not alot of repetitive drilling or tapping. So for me to use the machine for its intended purpose would be a waste. But I have been looking for a metal table or bench to weld on. I was going to just make one but I like older stuff.

I'd think you could swap one or two of the motors you'll get with the presses at a shop local to you to get a 110v motor. Then I'd keep a few odds-and-ends from one of the presses you stole the motor from to trade for parts. Then, the last two complete presses, I'd sell and recoupe the money you spent.

Sound like a good way to get yourself a free table, drill press and parts.

If you have the space, I'd set it up with the two tallest units at the extreme ends, add your table from your other DP to one and scrounge up another table for the other, and sell the rest. With the work I often do having two DP's setup for different operations is real handy. I can't imagine getting enough use out of all four to make that worthwhile however, that takes a manufacturing environment.

Well I bought it and I paid $150. He was offered $100 for scrap so I offered him $125 and I probably could have got it but the guy was willing to help me load it. Which is big deal since we will probably have to take it apart to get it out of the building. Plus he was very helpful with some information on where to get and sell parts. It was the last machine he had left from his former machine shop. Just the conversation about what machines he had and stuff he made was worth the few extra $$. I am picking it up later in the week. Not sure which direction I am going with it but I really like the Walker Turner table it is on.

I think $150 is a great purchase price for what you're getting. Be sure to snap better pics of it when you get it home.

I agree with what someone else said about setting up the two tall units at the far ends, and use the middle as a work table.
If it were mine, I'd keep the chamfer bit in one of them all the time. I try to chamfer ever hole I drill.

You shouldn't have any problem getting rid of the spare heads.
I agree about the table too--that's a really nice piece to have in your shop.

What does that "sucker" weigh. Gotta be 1000-1500 lbs.

A lot of the older machines wind up a scrap simply because the "hobbyist" does not have the wherewithall to move them.

I think the guy told me it was around 1200lbs. He mentioned the same thing about several of the machines he sold alot of guys wanted them but only if he would deliver them. He has a welding/assembly table that is over 4' wide by 7' long that is probably going to end up at the scrap yard. The top is over 1000lbs.

But for 150 bux it may have a good re-sale value...

That is one hell of a deal you got on that drill press setup!!!

And 150 is a steal for a welding table that big if it has a nice thick steel top. If I had the room and a way to move it I would jump all over that. If it really does weigh 1k lbs it is worth about 100 just as scrap But a thick piece of plate steel that big is probably worth 4x that!
