I just picked up this drill press for a pretty good deal. Everything works great. This thing is a beast. Had a fun time moving it. What do you guys think? It has some surface rust but nothing that won't come off. I'm planning on cleaning it up. Not sure how crazy I want to get.

It has an accessory I haven't seen before. It looks like some sort of variable speed control. It relocates the motor farther back so the factory belt guard is gone. I would like to get a replacement but I would have to remove the attachment. Do you guys think it's worth keeping it? I'm not sure how much functional value it adds. The pully on it does have some wobble.

The Savage Speed Juster works by a reeves drive double pulley that the arm adjusts. It's a '50's accessory. I'm sure if you want to sell it, someone will want it. But as to how much value it adds, I dunno.

I would think that adjuster is a good thing to slow the spindle speed down but it looks cracked?!?

great drill press i picked one up a year or so ago and went through it, cleaned up, painted, and new bearings. found a belt guard online, they are some what hard to find in good shape and had to get a new table elevating mechanism. its a solid drill press let me know if you have any questions on it.

thanks

So, depending on the column ID that's meant to go on I actually have a Speed Juster base sitting around... just doesn't have the pulley that goes on it. Let me find a picture soon...

Please see attached. Looks like it's for a 3.5" OD column. Fits over the top rather than into the ID like a lot of other designs.

The Speed Juster Definitely has a crack in it. I wasn't too worried about it at the time of purchase since I figured I would just remove it. I'll be on the lookout for a replacement belt guard.

The quill is really solid and other than the wobble on the Speed Juster pully everything else looks and sounds solid.

Are there any specific checks I should do? How would I check the bearings? I would like to fix any mechanical issues before cleaning it up completely.

I own a bench top Walker Turner drill press that was fully restored (or maybe all original) by an 80+ year old machinist in my area. at the time he also had a stand version like yours he needed to move so I bought it for a friend. that one had the extra pulley attachment to slow down the speed. I wish I would have had the machinist put that on mine, but no matter the new owner loves his and he does more metal work.

what i'm saying is that there was a stock or part available for your Walker Turner Drill press that should bolt right on it if you want to find one to buy and take off that one that appears to be broken.

surface rust cleans up pretty easily and just curious how everything else is?

nice find!!
