Trying to help a friend get this press going.
1. Has three phase motor and would like to get it to single phase. Can a vfd be installed on this motor?
2. Motor is 860 rpm and not sure of h.p
On the data plate. 1.5 1.75? Do not see a decimal point. Motor is terribly heavy so that is why I question h.p.
Thanks for any help with this. Bill

You may want to pursue a 3-phase motor and VFD, but I wouldn't put much effort into the one pictured. 860 rpm is half what the pulleys on the press are set up for. You want a 1725 rpm motor. Also, if my 5 minutes of research are correct, that motor is designed to be in a HVAC system in direct stream of the fan its driving (the term "Air-Over"). Pretty sure this means it won't be properly cooled if it's running a drill press instead of a huge fan. Now, maybe in light use that won't matter.

You could find a nice period-correct motor for short money...way less than a VFD. If you really want the VFD for convenient variable speed, you can find a 1725 rpm 3-phase easily, too.

That is the motor that was with the press..3 phase
So your saying that press originally had a ,1725 rpm motor?

I would have to agree that the motor you have is probably not the correct motor for that machine.

Do you have the motor pulley and is it a match to the driven pulley? If you have the motor pulley and do a bit of math you can figure the spindle speeds with a 860 rpm motor and a 1725 rpm motor and then select the the spindle speed range you want to operate in.

Yes I have motor pulley. Never thought that was not correct motor. It is not installed on press so it may not be correct. Thanks..will keep posting as I work on this project

What is your friend going to do with it? If your friend is using to drill metal, I would definitely keep that motor. Your speed range is currently 200-1300rpm. I always hear of folks wanting to slow down their drill presses for metal drilling, not go faster.

No wonder it is heavy, slower motors have more poles and tend to be heavier. The Service Factor of 1.33 also shows it is over designed for heavy duty usage.

Personally, I would put a 120vac input 1hp VFD on It. You can set the VFD max current so that you do not have so much torque to break stuff. Just lubricate the bearings though.

Ditto on the value of a lower RPM motor for drill presses working in metals, especially steel.
I picked up a dual-gang Rockwell some years back and it had 1140 rpm motors on it.
That said tho, your air-over motor is not the best for that D.P..... but you do have it. Tool Scrounge's suggestion sounds interesting, especially if your motor has the correct, multiple sheave pulley on it.

I would keep that motor. It looks like a good one. Even though the motor is 1.5 HP you can get away with a 1 HP Teco L510 VFD with 120 VAC single phase input. Just set the pulleys at the highest speed setting and use the VFD to go as low as you want. At 1.5HP/860 RPM, your motor will have very strong torque at the low end. If you're worried about the top end just overclock the VFD to squeeze out some additional speed. I think a 1.5X overclock would be fine if ever needed.

Where are you located? I have an original single phase 1hp motor out of this model DP, but its probably too heavy to ship.

I am in the U.P. of Michigan. How about you. The owner may be interested.. also not sure pulley is correct. Only 4 sheaves and one on quill has 5

Yeah that's my ad. The motor is heavy enough to require crating and shipping by freight, would probably run $150ish. The step pulley should be a 5-sheave, unfortunately the one on my machine was on so tightly it broke when I tried to press it off. I'll send you the busted one for the price of shipping if you're okay with the smallest sheave being unusable.

Hello
I am new to this forum. Haven't figured out how to PM yet. If you still have the return spring, return spring housing, or feed handle I would be interested in buying them.

Regards
BD

Finally got the press home and going to start on it. What is the correct Manuel for this? One that covers all 1100 press? Lots of the net but want to order correct one
Friend that I'm doing this for just wants it operational. Going to install 2 h.p. motor so I can use the existing motor pulley that has a 1 1/8" shaft. Will get bushing to size motor and pulley.
Any thoughts on my plans or Manuel would be appreciated. Thanks. Bill
