Walker-Turner KAB-10e hum...

I have an old General table saw that has a Walker Turner KAB-10e 1HP 110/220V 15.4/7.7A Single phase 125A Frame Motor.

It is currently wired for 220V.

I tried to run it and it hums... I checked the start capacitor, and it was bad.

I replaced the start capacitor with the same size.

and tried again. It still hums.

The motor spins easily by hand.


My guess is that the internal switch is stuck open, not allowing the start capacitor to connect. Not sure how good that quess is... or how to verify that... so thought I would see if someone can point me to how to troubleshoot this further.

Could you spin the motor by hand (without losing a finger) while powered to see if it will start up and run? That will verify that it's capable of running and just might free up the centrifugal switch.
...Assuming that's what's wrong and not a faulty winding.

I have found a piece of winding lashing thread stuck across the start switch contacts before that put things out of action.
