Walker Turner Radial Drill

I recently found this Walker Turner Radial Drill press on marketplace, and had to bring it home. I have never seen one quite like this in person. It is pretty ugly, and it is missing the motor (and the step pulley that goes on the motor). The spindle bearings are a little noisy. The lift mechanism for the column/head assembly has issues. Turning the crank handle one way will raise the column a little, but the other direction will not lower it.

A little digging on the Vintage Machinery web site makes it look like it was built in the early 1940's.

I think it will get a complete tear down, clean up, and repaint. I'm not sure what to do for a motor. I should probably just get a single phase motor and run with that, but I kind of want to use a three phase motor with a VFD for easy speed control. I really like that combination on my Millrite milling machine.

I always liked those old wt radial drill presses. I looked for one for awhile then a wt 1100 showed up and I bought it and stopped looking for a radial dp. I have a smaller radial drill press that never gets used so I guess I didn't need a wt radial but I wouldn't turn one down.

They made a radial arm saw that has the same parts too. I can't find the photos but I have the EDM version of this set up (I'm pretty sure it must have been the 1st EDM). A lot of the DP parts are standard from regular drill presses. I've always wanted to convert mine to the drill press too so it would be multi function but that project has found it's way to the back burner.

There are stop screws for the column which may be preventing yours from lowering.

I took the column lift mechanism apart, and found several teeth broken off one of the bevel gears. That gear has a threaded bushing pressed into it that is held in place with two set screws. The bushing had pulled out of the gear. Probably from someone cranking the lift handle while the column was jammed. I took the column lock apart, and pushed the column out with a hydraulic bottle jack. A good cleaning, and that column now moves as it should.

I guess the next task is to figure out how to fix this gear. Does anyone know what these gears are made of? I am assuming it is some kind of un-weldable pot metal, so there is probably no chance of fixing this gear. If I could find another gear, I could bore it to fit the threaded sleeve, and assemble them. It looks like there are lots of sources to get gears. If I can figure out how to identify this gear size, I could probably buy a new gear to use.

-If this gear is magnetic then repair is possible, if non-magnetic then no. Repair will involve brazing/welding new metal on and then creating the tooth profile. The profiling will be done by hand so it depends upon how willing you are to put the time into doing this. If replacement is possible then it's a simple bevel gear that only has to mesh with a matching gear that will fit. It's just for raising/lowering the head so there isn't speed/load to consider. The pressed in threaded bushing will have to fit into the replacement? You'll need a lathe or mill (using a boring head). A suitable replacement bevel gear may be available from Boston Gear, Motion Industries, or another supply house but the hub will likely need machining for the bushing. It's a nice DP that I'd have in the shop and restoration is a worthy project. Congratulations on the addition.

McMaster has several 30-tooth gears. The diagrams may help with dimensions. Machining will likely be needed.

I spent a bunch of time trying to figure out a way to fix the broken gear teeth. Everything I considered seemed like a lot of time, and still some money to end up with a half assed fix. I finally gave up on that, and figured out that these were Module (Modulus?) 2.5 bevel gears. With that detail, I found gears at a distributor in Florida, made of steel (unlike the original die cast potmetal gears) with the same tooth count, and similar external dimensions, so I ordered them. They were both shorter than the originals, and had smaller bores, but that was simple machine work. I bored the big gear to a press fit of the threaded insert, and bored the small gear to fit the hand crank shaft, then cut a keyway. I made spacer collars to go under both, and ended up with a pretty fair gear mesh with just a little backlash.

Now hopefully I can carry a little momentum, and start cleaning up the rest of the drill press.

Anybody the apropiate suze/type so I search to find out

I'm heading the 3 phase way at the me moment so i run a reostad for speed control but please tell/stop Me if I'm wrong
