Looks great so far! Wish I had that much space. Here's what I did as far as color scheme. Kinda close to what you were describing.

From my own experience, you want a super bright white up top to diffuse light and make the work space brighter... The lower you go, the darker you want it (think dirty hands). To that same end, I also recommend going with a semi-gloss so you can wipe down problems and get them cleaned easily.

This is my house garage, newly done: white up top, dark blue stripe, with charcoal grey at the bottom.

This is the shop color setup. Same white, same grey, and over time the plan is to put corregated metal on the bottom 4':

The brighter the walls/ceiling the bigger it makes the garage or any room as far as that goes. I had a off white color in my 3 stall and repainted with the brightest white I could find and it was unreal how much brighter it made my garage. I also thinks it makes it look much cleaner.

White on top is always good. In my old shop I put some yellow/black industrial walkway tape as a "border" between the bottom color and white and I thought it looked cool, just an idea:

Looks nice. As an instructor, a techie, and a lover of practical things, I really like having a whiteboard surface around. So I bought a couple of 10'x30" rolls of whiteboard material that I plan on using at about the height of your white area. However, if I wanted a really BOLD whiteboard surface that would (in my mind) look KILLER in a garage, I'd love to spend the $ for this stuff in ORANGE...

With black dry erase marker, your project sketches and notes would be like art on the walls.

EDITED TO ADD:
Your pic shows how if the upper surface is white and clean, it helps the whole place look less messy - you've got stuff around the walls at the base, but it's not really noticeable with the color scheme.
