Wall Color

The drywallers will be in tomorrow to finish the walls in the garage. I am looking for ideas on painting the walls. The room is 22" X 32" and the cathedral ceiling goes up to 16'. I like the idea of 2 tone walls with a stripe separating the colors. I am thinking of maybe painting the walls in the higher portion another color. Ideas?

I looked at a lot of pictures on the site but a lot of them don't show the walls very well, as a wall view. So, what are your ideas and how about pictures?

Thanks,

Lou

Being that you'd most likely have things up against or near the walls of your garage, I'd suggest you paint the lower portion (first 4' at least) of your wall a darker color. Mine showing pictures of your garage and the exterior? This can help in deciding the pattern(s) and colors to go with.

I painted the drywall with kilz. I also have fluorescent lights so the garage is super bright.

as version stated stick with a dark color for the first 4-5' up the wall, a broom handle will leave marks on white drywall, imagine a greasy palm print! A middle color than can be used to seperate the lower color but i would also suggest white for the top above the color you choose. Much better reflection and more bang for your buck in the lighting department.

My garage has 10' ceilings and my plan is as follows; floor to 4' navy blue, 6"-12" stripe in red and the upper portion high gloss white.

Hope this helps!

My garage is white primer at the suggestion of the painter who did it. I was skeptical but that was about 5 years ago now and it still looks great and is really bright.

dark grey on the bottom, stripe, light grey on top

I went with this as it looked fairly practical

But I did away with the stripe and covered the joint with a power rail thing

Which has the power and air and in the end water too running round the wall

White will always amplify your lighting. Not a bad thing in a garage where you actually work on stuff. There's not much exposed wall in my garage below the 5' mark due to machinery, shelving and benches, but the white above those things, and on the ceiling sure make a big difference.

I did white top, black stripe, gray bottom.
As stated the white reflects light, gray hides scuff marks, black just to add a touch of class. And all my paint was nearly free.
People use different colors for different reasons. Sports team colors, match the prized car, factory auto colors, match the house. You really can't go wrong unless it's something like purple, green, and yellow.

Personally I would go with one color on the walls and white on the ceiling. I think the two-toned walls with a stripe is looking really outdated.

To me one single color is just too bland, unless there is some kind of graphics or mural on the wall.

I prefer all white.
Walls and ceiling.
But the gray bottom half may hide some dirt.

Ignore the mess, but here's the best picture I could find of what I did on mine...

As requested here are some pictures of the garage. The side walls are 32' and the back wall is 20'.The top of the ceiling is 15'6" and will be covered in white metal siding. The room I am concerned with is the one with the small door. The white wall is the outside wall and the pink wall is the center wall of the building. The larger room will be white metal on the sides and ceiling.

Thanks for the advice.

Lou

Hesketh - I like that power rail setup. I wish I had known about that before I placed all 30 electrical boxes!

It seems that gray is a popular color which is pretty much confirmed by the number of 2 tone gray walls I saw in some searching on the site. After some thought I am leaning toward a medium gray on the bottom and a pale light gray on the upper portion. I was thinking of maybe adding a Buick GSX strip in the middle:

I did a light grey over blue knowing that I was going to hang signs all over the top color.

Thanks for more ideas. I think I will need to get the sample strips out. I am thinking maybe a bluish gray bottom with a very light gray top to hide dirt.

Mine is just primer now but the color combination you are thinking of is what I am planning as well.

all white semi gloss gets my vote.

don't use flat paint, you'll be sorry. use satin as a minimum sheen, it cleans off so much easier.

Ceiling and upper walls should be white or a very light slightly off-white color. Bottom 3-4' can be a darker color that complements the upper color and the strip, if you so choose. CT2012 is correct, DON'T use flat paint ... satin or gloss.

My ceiling is gloss white steel panels. Upper walls are clover white (white with a very slight green tint), dark Oliver green stripe, magnetic grey lower (medium grey with a hint of green), and dark Oliver green on foundation blocks.

I like to be different and don't always go for the white, light, bright, theory. I have no problem seeing in what I have and it's all dark, although the corrugated metal MAY reflect a little

BTW....when it comes to paint, it is a personal preference. You will get as many answers to what to paint it as there are member who respond to the thread. The best thing to do is go to the paint store and start picking out paint chips, the bigger the better, bring them home and start tacking them to the wall, then eliminating the ones you don't like. Narrow it down to a few, then you can buy samples of paint to see if you like it or not. But with paint, it's a given...you can lead, or you can follow. It's all in what colors you like, and no one can really tell you what to paint it. And paint is relatively cheap. In fifteen years, I bet I have painted my garage 3 or 4 times, and each time it was something different. Started with all white, changed to a beige, had it all a light gray at one time, a light real pale yellow, now maroon and black with corrugated metal. When I get my addition on, it may be something totally different. I do have some ideas for that.

Wow Kev, I didn't even realize you had a garage! Nice. Not to hijack but what's the ceiling covered with?

It's just drywall that was stomped. I had it white for a number of years, but then one day I thought what the hell....let's do something different. Like I said, paint is cheap. Someday down the road, I may go back with white. :dunno: It's just something different, and really.....I like it. I don't see dust webs or spider webs in the corners, I don't see it yellowing, and I can go twice as long between repaints than what a white ceiling can.

Now all I have to do is finish putting up the tin on the walls. Both sides are done, but I have the front and back wall to do. And you know how garage projects go? If you don't do it all at once, some things tend to slide.
