anybody have any thoughts or suggestions on wall color. Some people have suggested that white gets to dirty looking to fast. Within reason i don't care about looks I'm painting for protection and primarily to help with lighting thanks for any thoughts

If you don't care about looks and just want to help with lighting... do white. You can always hit it with a blow gun if dust starts to settle on it.

If you do woodworking, grab some saw dust and see if you can find a color to match :)

I am no interior designer but here are my thoughts based on the last 4 garages I have owned. Ultimately I suggest a light grey if you are going all one color. It will hide some dirt and marks while also keeping the space bright.

1.Bare wood- hated it. Always felt dirty and never seemed finished
2.Painted 2 car garage with 2 walls dark grey and 2 walls white- Looked great but the dark grey did **** up too much light.
3. Painted a harley color theme. White on top and dark grey on bottom with orange and black stripe. It was a little too busy for me and overtime I did get sick of it. Again the dark grey soaked up a lot of light.
4. Current 3 car garage with all white drywall walls. Feels clean, bright and finished. wall art stands out well. Shows every little bit of dirt, insects, spider webs, etc.

That's kind of where I'm leaning a light grey or even a beige or other earthy color i race dirt cars and do a little bit of everything so it will be exposed to just about any condition you can think of

A very light grey will still hide occasional schmutz pretty well. It also softens the light a little without sucking much of it up. Use something with at least a little bit of gloss, flat can be hard to clean up. The sheen also helps hide imperfections in the wall surfaces, in my opinion... I say this as a glossy-wall hater but it's a necessary evil for a room that sees any work.

A very light neutral color. Darker colors for the things you touch. But the walls and ceiling are primarily there to reflect and diffuse your light.

My parents' garage is a beige and it looks really nice. When they built it, Mom wanted it to be a flex space for when we have family events and didn't want it to feel like a garage so she painted it the same color as the den. I never would have thought to do that, but it works.

I was talking to a builder and one thing he does after painting it white, is spray the walls and ceiling with spackle. I don't know what else to call it. It hides all imperfections in long walls, it's washable, and it toughens it up a bit over regular drywall.

Thanks for all the info. Walls are osb slick side exposed. Don't really care about covering joints or hiding imperfections. It's a working space and i like being able to run a screw wherever i want to hang somthing. I will be priming the entire shop with kilz original prior to painting. Theirs three foot of block at the bottom with 1.5 esp and osb over it thinking i will paint the bottom somthing darker that won't show as much

I just finished painting my plywood barn walls with SW Argos grey. I like it. Bright enough but will hide some dirt too.

I sell paint at a big box store. If the walls are raw, before you paint put on a coat of PVA primer. It's cheap and dries fast. It will help reduce your paint consumption, especially over raw drywall or plywood.

If your walls have been painted before and you want to change the color, put on a coat of primer with "high-hide" or similar on the label. This will help give a more uniform base for the new paint. It feels like primer is a waste since modern paints are billed as self-priming. This really isn't the case because primer is so much cheaper and really does make a difference in the final result.

I'd suggest a slightly shiny sheen. Something like satin or semigloss (if you like pretty shiny walls) will reduce the dust build-up on your walls. Satin is just flat enough to cover flaws in a drywall job like I usually leave behind. Flat and eggshell will get dirty really fast in a garage.

Color is a personal choice. Grey tones are popular right now and it's best to find a color you like under natural light (rather than the blue lights at Lowe's and Home Depot).

Paint it a light color. If you properly prime and use a quality latex paint, you'll be surprised how easy it is to keep clean.

I myself went with dark on bottom, light on top, and colored stripe in the middle. Totally worth the extra effort in my opinion, but then again most of the walls get covered up with cabinets and **** so it probably doesn't matter that much.

I went 4 tone..........

The very bottom is actually the concrete stem wall

Then Med Gray

Light Gray

White for the ceiling.

I used Exterior semi-gloss.

About the only surface that really matters is the ceiling..........because once you get the garage where you want it, the walls are covered.....
